"911. Call me now." That's the text I got from my wife.

I was working in Indianapolis, and I'd already missed a couple of her calls because I was busy. When I finally called her back, she told me our oldest son needed emergency open-heart surgery.

I wanted to trade places with him right there. I couldn't even bear to face him, and if I'm honest, it wasn't just fear about the surgery. It was realizing I didn't really know my own son. I hadn't been an absent father. I'd been a present one who wasn't actually present.

I'd spent years telling myself I'd get my life back one day. That day, the bill came due.
