wrong. people often use the term shirting and shirt as synonymous, just as they use suit and suiting interchangeably. in fact, shirting means fabrics used for shirts, just as suiting means fabrics used for suits. like the difference between the terms fabric and garment

in tailoring, the terms overcoating also means fabrics used for overcoats and jacketing means fabrics used for jackets (often sport coats). however, i've never heard the term pantsing. i don't know why
