Congress has restored funding of appropriated activities, and the National Archives has begun to restore normal operations. We are working to open to the public as soon as possible. Please check our website for updates.

We’re sorry, but we will not be able to post updates to our social media channels during the government shutdown. All National Archives events– virtual or in person– are canceled until further notice. We will be unable to reply to messages or emails until the government reopens.

This week, we’re combining our #Harry140 commemoration & the anniversary of the surrender of Japan, ending World War II. This photo is from a different angle than our other photos of this event. https://t.co/PDrPdHf86D

#OTD in 1945, the U. S. released an atomic bomb above Hiroshima, Japan in an effort to end World War II. Here, an injured policeman writes relief certificates for rice rations to survivors. The photographer was the only person to capture images of the destruction on this day.

One of the most important things to remember about your #ArchivesCampfire is to remember to put it out, & Smokey Bear helps us to do that! A baby Smokey Bear from New Mexico is presented to the National Zoo, Washington, D. C. in 1950. #ArchivesHashtagParty https://t.co/9asjF6TRUc

While this looks like a familiar photo, this particular #Harry140 photo has an interesting story. This was the first ever color news photograph to be transmitted & received by radio waves & published. See the original photo here: https://t.co/xx14GITATg

#Harry140 photo this week shows former President Truman on vacation! In 1958, Harry & Bess went to Europe aboard the SS Constitution (Bess didn't like to fly). This photo shows HST chatting with an unidentified man, possibly a cameraman, on board the ship. https://t.co/Gdaa5MM5HS

@hchesner @safier @JTSLibrary @USNatArchives Thank you for tagging us! We might have further information regarding this visit in our textual & audio-visual holdings. If you'd like us to check on this, please send an email to [email protected]. Our A-V archivist is out right now, but will be in office next week.

This week’s #Harry140 photo shows a different angle of a familiar event – HST speaking at the closing session of the United Nations Conference. We don't always have motion picture footage of events, so having multiple photos can help reconstruct it. https://t.co/t6xhy1Dmod

As with another photo from earlier this year, this #Harry140 photo shows HST greeting visitors to the Truman Library! This young man in cowboy gear had his picture taken with HST & then sent this copy of the photo to Mr. Truman after his visit. https://t.co/e4Tk8Lz01e

It's time to #ArchivesHashtagParty with #ArchivesPets! The Trumans weren't really pet people, but for a short time after they came to the White House, they had an Irish Setter named Mike that was gifted to them. Here is "Mike's Menu." https://t.co/4YuhGJNOLt

Important question for #MenuMonday: what's your preferred format for eating potatoes? On this menu, Mrs. Truman crossed out the baked potatoes served with filet mignon & requested french fries instead. What would you rather eat with filet mignon? https://t.co/mrD5AZRAmy

In the early days of the Library, visitors might get the chance to meet Mr. Truman if they arrived or left at the same time as him. The Cropper family did that & took a picture with HST at the administrative entrance to the Library in 1960 for this week’s #Harry140 photo.

It's time for a #FileUnitFriday! We recently digitized all the National Security Council Meetings from the President's Secretary's Files. Report from May 1951 regards issues in Asia. Item: https://t.co/u3o3kyzeif; File Unit: https://t.co/VNybh70SdL

HST often received gifts & tokens of appreciation from groups that came to see him at the White House. In this 1952 #Harry140 photo, the National Cartoonist’s Society gives HST this bust of Abraham Lincoln. This bust is part of our Museum collection! https://t.co/QWIY7ugWkR

Happy birthday, Harry S. Truman! Today we commemorate the 140th anniversary of Mr. Truman's birth. This morning we had our official wreath-laying ceremony. #Harry140

Our #Harry140 photo this week shows HST at the Truman Library groundbreaking ceremony in May 1955, ready to put his shovel in the ground. With him are members of the Truman Library Foundation, which organized the fundraising drive to construct the Library. https://t.co/CcYkk8NZu5
