As he rounded a corner, he came face-to-face with the gunman, who raised a rifle and shot him. The bullet shattered Austin's upper arm and severed an artery, leaving him critically wounded.
Even after being shot, Austin's actions drew the gunman's attention away from others, giving people precious moments to escape. His wife and their friend, both emergency room nurses, found him bleeding, controlled the hemorrhage, rushed him to the hospital, and helped save his life.
He underwent emergency surgery and now faces months of recovery, rehabilitation, mounting medical bills, and lost income.
