After undergoing a double mastectomy, a supermodel experiences symptoms during her major fashion runway debut. A shortfilm by @rachelfbetts, coming soon 🎀
Our #WomanCrushWednesday is First Lady Betty Ford. Her openness about her breast cancer diagnosis helped bring this issue to light. In 1974, she accompanied a friend to a breast exam, and was encouraged to have an exam as well. The doctor found a lump in her right breast.
“Lying in the hospital, thinking of all those women going for cancer checkups because of me, I’d come to recognize more clearly the power of the woman in the White House. Not my power, but the power of the position, a power which could be used to help,” she said.
Breast cancer among males is rare; less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. According to https://t.co/ctx1D1VC27, about 2,650 men are expected to be diagnosed with the disease, and an estimated 530 men are expected to die from breast cancer in 2021.

Richard Roundtree was 51 when he was diagnosed with breast cancer. The actor of the 1971 classic ‘Shaft’ found a lump in his chest while filming a movie in Costa Rica. When interviewed for ABC in 2007, he said he just didn’t feel right & decided to get it checked out.
He was successfully treated with a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. He waited until his fifth cancer-free year to go public. “The room was totally silent. I think it dawned on people that men can be affected by this too,” he said in the 2007 interview.
Since then, campaigns have grown all around the world to increase awareness, educate people about methods of prevention and early detection, and raise money to support research. 🎀

Today marks the first day of #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth. BCAM started in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. The campaign aimed to promote mammography to detect and prevent breast cancer.
Everybody associates BCMA with the pink ribbon, but not everyone knows its origin. In 1993, Evelyn Lauder - Senior Corporate VP of the Estée Lauder Companies - founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and made the pink ribbon the symbol of what is also known as #PinkOctober

According to a recent CNN article based on a new report, “breast cancer in women has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world.” The report was published in the CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians early February.
It estimates the number of new cases of female breast cancer to be 2.3 million in 2020 while lung cancer made up 11.4% of total cases diagnosed. Breast cancer may be the most diagnosed cancer in the world, but it doesn’t lead in deaths.
