A 12-year-old girl was shot multiple times on a New York City street — caught in crossfire.

This is outrageous. Innocent children are paying the price for violent criminals who have absolutely no regard for human life.

Just two months ago, 12-year-old Jacob Freytes was shot and killed at a bodega — caught in crossfire. I worked with Jacob’s mom, Migdalia Martinez, and legislators in Albany to introduce Jacob’s Law — an act that would punish and deter violence like this by enhancing penalties for reckless homicide of a child.

As Attorney General, I will make prosecuting dangerous criminals and protecting innocent New Yorkers a priority. I’ll activate the Organized Crime Task Force to prosecute violent criminal enterprises, launch a statewide gang database to help law enforcement identify and apprehend criminals, and work with legislators to get Jacob’s Law passed.

Our children deserve safe streets, not excuses from the people responsible for keeping them safe.
