The killing of Dr Abdulhay Munshi still raises serious questions six years later - especially because it had all the hallmarks of a professional hit.
Abdulhay Munshi was shot dead in September 2020 after his vehicle was bumped from behind in Orange Grove, Johannesburg. When he stopped and got out, gunmen opened fire and fled.
At the time, Munshi and Prof Peter Beale were facing culpable homicide charges linked to a death following surgery. That immediately fuelled speculation about whether the murder was connected to the medical case.
But despite the public profile of the case, no arrests have been made to date.
Why?
What also deepened suspicion was that Dr Munshi’s killing did not resemble a random robbery.
Even the then chair of the South African Medical Association, Angelique Coetzee, said it appeared more like an assassination than ordinary crime. That sentiment was widely shared in medical circles.
Another important development came later: in 2025, Prof Beale was acquitted on all charges in the Johannesburg High Court. The court found the State failed to prove criminal intent or negligence beyond reasonable doubt.
That outcome has reignited debate about whether Munshi was unfairly vilified publicly before his death and whether investigators ever fully explored all possible motives behind the murder.
The uncomfortable reality is this: South Africa has a long list of unresolved assassinations involving whistleblowers, professionals, business figures and people linked to sensitive matters.
When early investigative momentum is lost, these cases often go cold.
