Brussels has been a sh*thole for a long time but what I don’t get is how EU bureaucrats look at this day in day out and still impose more of this on Europe - on themselves and their children.

De minister is hier op het eind heel duidelijk, de lokale democratie is niet (!) van de inwoners van de gemeente maar van het gemeentebestuur en die mag dus tegen de zin van de inwoners in besluiten de lokale democratie op te heffen.

Met dezelfde logica zou de Tweede Kamer bijvoorbeeld kunnen besluiten Nederland bij Duitsland te voegen zonder daarbij de Nederlandse bevolking ook maar iets te vragen. De minister vindt deze vergelijking onjuist, maar waarom?

Als de gemeenteraad een gemeente kan opheffen en samenvoegen met een andere gemeente zonder toestemming van de inwoners waarom zou de Tweede Kamer dan Nederland niet kunnen opheffen en samenvoegen met bijvoorbeeld Duitsland zonder Nederlanders ook maar iets te vragen?

Wacht even, dat is al gebeurd! Nederland is opgegaan in de Europese Unie! Een politieke unie. Daarbij is de Nederlandse bevolking bovendien niet slechts gepasseerd. Nee, de Nederlandse bevolking heeft hier op 1 juni 2005 expliciet met ruime meerderheid tegen (!) gestemd in een referendum en een paar jaar later is dat Europees grondwettelijk verdrag, het Verdrag van Lissabon, in 2007, desalniettemin toch door de Nederlandse regering ondertekend.

Daarmee is, vanuit democratisch oogpunt, dat wil zeggen aangenomen dat in laatste instantie niet het Nederlands parlement en de Nederlandse regering (die paar mensen) maar de gehele Nederlandse bevolking de eigenaar is van ons land, de Europese Unie natuurlijk volstrekt illegitiem.
