Today is Julian Assange’s birthday. He has turned 55. Assange came into this world on July 3, 1971, on the very day Jim Morrison departed from it. Assange fought the Big Brother from the most horrific dystopian novels, and he paid the price. For twelve years he was deprived of light, stripped of a normal life, and denied the right to fully practice genuine journalism.

Assange and I have known each other for a long time. I visited him a few times at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Open conversation was out of the question there. Instead, seated face-to-face, we would write notes back and forth to each other.
