My brother, the day money finally starts obeying you is the day your discipline must become louder than your appetite.
Remember that.
You hit a beautiful score.
The tender comes through.
The account suddenly has numbers that used to exist only in your imagination.
People who never returned your calls suddenly know your nickname.
Restaurants start remembering your table.
Women who could not see you when you were struggling suddenly discover excellent eyesight.
That is not the moment to lose your head.
That is the moment to find it.
And when I look at the public story surrounding Vusimuzi โCatโ Matlala, there is a lesson I personally refuse to ignore.
Not because I am declaring him guilty of charges currently before the courts. He has pleaded not guilty, and the court must decide those matters.
I am talking about something much simpler.
How quickly a man's life can become crowded when money, access, relationships, ego and poor decisions begin sitting at the same table.
His company once landed a SAPS contract worth hundreds of millions.
Think about that.
For most people, receiving an opportunity on that scale would feel like God had finally opened a window after years of knocking on walls.
That is when I would want to become boring.
Extremely boring.
Go home.
Look after my family.
Pay the bond.
Educate the children.
Fix whatever has been broken in the house.
Buy land.
Build something that will still have my surname on it when I am gone.
Sleep.
Wake up.
Work again.
Because once life has finally given you something worth protecting, why volunteer for unnecessary chaos?
That is the part many men misunderstand.
They think making money means they have graduated from discipline.
No, my brother.
You have just enrolled in the advanced class.
Poverty tests whether you can survive without things.
Money tests whether you can survive having access to everything.
And I swear the second examination has buried many more powerful men than they ever expected.
When you are broke, temptation sometimes cannot find your address.
Make money and suddenly temptation has your live location.
That is when a man has to know what enough looks like.
If you are married and you have somebody who has chosen to build a home with you, do not suddenly decide that loyalty was only necessary while the bank account was empty.
Do not make the mistake of thinking your wife is โtoo simpleโ because she is not competing with the lifestyle outside.
Peace often looks boring to somebody who has never lost it.
You only discover its price after chaos sends you the invoice.
And that is the lesson I take from stories like Cat Matlala's.
Not that girlfriends automatically send men to prison.
That would be foolish.
Not that marriage magically protects somebody from bad decisions.
Clearly, life is more complicated than that.
The lesson is this:
Success gives your choices longer shadows.
When an ordinary man makes a foolish decision, sometimes five people hear about it.
When a wealthy and connected man starts making questionable choices, there are businesses, families, employees, reputations, lawyers, headlines and entire futures standing behind him.
The fall has more floors.
Today Matlala's name is not being discussed simply because of the money his businesses once touched.
It is being spoken in courtrooms, commissions and criminal proceedings while he remains in custody.
Whatever the courts ultimately decide, that contrast alone should make every ambitious man think.
You can spend twenty years trying to get into rooms that matter and a surprisingly short period making decisions that leave you unable to go home.
That frightens me.
So when your own breakthrough eventually comes, calm down.
You do not need to taste everything simply because you can finally afford the menu.
You do not need a new woman because you bought a new car.
You do not need a secret apartment because the tender paid.
You do not need to prove to anybody that you have arrived.
Arrival is not the achievement.
Remaining standing is.
Take care of the people who were already sitting beside you when your phone was quiet.
Protect your name.
Protect your home.
Protect your freedom.
Invest.
Disappear from unnecessary drama.
Let people call you boring while your children inherit something.
Because money can buy an impressive weekend.
Wisdom is what gets you safely to old age.
And perhaps that is the sentence I want my brothers to remember:
When God finally puts something valuable in your hands, do not become the reason He has to watch you lose it.
