Lieutenant‑General Mkhwanazi Secures Second Term as KZN Police Commissioner

The KZN provincial government has moved to extend the tenure of Lieutenant‑General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi as the KwaZulu‑Natal Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), endorsing a further five‑year contract that will see him continue in the post beyond March 2026.

Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has formally backed the renewal of Mkhwanazi’s contract following discussions with National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, reaffirming the province’s confidence in the commissioner’s leadership amid ongoing efforts to tackle high levels of violent and organised crime in the region. Ntuli’s office said the decision reflects “firm confidence in the leadership, professionalism and ethical standards demonstrated by Lieutenant‑General Mkhwanazi throughout his tenure.”

Mkhwanazi, who has served as the province’s top police official since 2021, has gained prominence for his outspoken and assertive style, particularly in confronting organised crime, corruption and what he has described as interference in police operations.

His tenure included high‑profile allegations against senior officials that that are currently being examined by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into criminality and political interference.

The endorsement marks a significant show of political support for the commissioner at a time when KwaZulu‑Natal continues to grapple with one of the country’s highest crime rates. Provincial authorities say extending Mkhwanazi’s term will reinforce continuity and intensify efforts to build safer communities across the province.
