People used to ask me why I’m always the one at clinic with the baby. ❤️
Here’s why: Her mom is at university right now, building something bigger for our family. She’s in lecture halls, writing tests, chasing a degree. And while she’s doing that, someone has to make sure our daughter’s Road to Health booklet gets filled, that the vaccines happen on time, that she’s safe and warm.

So that someone is me.

I sit on this wooden bench with her asleep on my chest, her little pink onesie all bunched up, clinic card in my hand. I used to think fatherhood was about providing from far away. Now I know it’s about showing up close. It’s the questions I ask the nurse. It’s learning which way she likes to be held. It’s being the calm when she cries.

And here’s what I want every father reading this to hear:

Your child doesn’t need you to be rich. They don’t need you to have all the answers. They need your arms. They need you to know their clinic dates. They need you to love them without making it complicated.

While her mom studies for all of us, I get the privilege of loving her through every fever, every vaccine, every quiet moment on this bench.

Brothers, step up. Hold your babies. Learn the clinic schedule. Change the nappy. Sing off-key. Love them loudly.

RESPONSE TO BRACKENDOWNS INCIDENT

The video circulating on social media, in which members of Brackendowns SAPS are seen allegedly refusing to assist a member of the public with an affidavit, has been brought to the attention of the Acting District Commissioner for Ekurhuleni, Brigadier David Ngcobo.

The members depicted in the video have since been identified.

The matter is being addressed internally, and the members concerned will be subjected to appropriate internal disciplinary processes.

The Acting District Commissioner has condemned the conduct depicted in the video and reiterates that members of the South African Police Service are expected to serve the public with professionalism, courtesy and respect as required by the Code of Conduct.

Members of the public are encouraged to report service delivery complaints involving SAPS members to the following numbers;
