I think the underlying issue is the Western/European obsession with Jerusalem. “Two state solution” is a politically correct way of expressing their deep desire to give the old city and the holy basin to the enemies of the Jewish people, and they are angry with Israel for frustrating their plans

Vandaag gesproken met Oxfam Novib, PAX, Artsen Zonder Grenzen, Save the Children en Amnesty. Organisaties die onder de moeilijkste omstandigheden levens redden en opkomen voor mensenrechten.

Ook in Gaza en op de Westelijke Jordaanoever, waar hun collega’s dagelijks enorme risico’s lopen. De situatie daar blijft onmenselijk. Ondanks afspraken over een staakt-het-vuren gaan de aanvallen door, terwijl humanitaire hulp nog altijd veel te moeilijk de mensen bereikt die het hard nodig hebben.

Dit kabinet blijft zich daarom duidelijk uitspreken tegen schendingen van het internationaal recht. We voeren de druk op de regering-Netanyahu op, werken aan maatregelen tegen producten uit illegale nederzettingen en zetten ons in voor extra sancties tegen gewelddadige kolonisten én Hamas.

Want de Palestijnen verdienen vrede en perspectief op een eigen staat, naast een veilig Israël. Daarom blijven we werken aan de enige duurzame oplossing: de twee-staten oplossing. Iedere stap richting annexatie is voor ons onacceptabel.

This whole episode reveals a much deeper problem. The leaders of Dutch universities have allowed their institutions to become places where those who do not share the keffiyeh-clad ideology of vocal antisemitic or anti-Zionist factions are silenced. When they try to speak, they are vilified, threatened and abused. This is the antithesis of scientific inquiry and academic freedom. It is time for the universities to protect adequately and equally the academic freedom and the physical and emotional safety of all their staff and students – including Jewish staff and students.

We at the Hague Initiative for International Cooperation (thinc.) contributed to the organisation of a symposium held at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam om Thursday 7 May 2026. This event has attracted considerable media attention. Many outlets have portrayed it as an attempt to stage a one-sided, secretive pro-Israel gathering that threatened the safety and freedom of those who do not share a “pro-Israel” perspective.

This event has been criticised as one-sided. It is definitely true that three of the speakers - Maj. Andrew Fox, Prof. Danny Orbach and Anne Herzberg - were presenting perspectives that challenge the mainstream view that already prejudges the outcome of the cases currently before the ICJ. Two of the speakers (Orbach and Herzberg) are Israeli. Nevertheless, each speaker was tasked with presenting his/her case from a rigourous academic perspective, and in our view they did so. In our view they did so. At the same time, the charged atmosphere had the result that some comments were made by some speakers that were emotive and subjective. That is unfortunate, but they can hardly be criticised for this given the aggressive atmosphere that was created by the university‘s own staff at this event. They were, quite simply, ambushed and attacked. That, and not their emotive reaction reactions, should be condemned. And that is exactly what the mainstream media so far (Parool, AD, NRC) have failed to do.
