Survival analysis is useful for assessing the overall impact of social compliance on a firm, summarizing all of the effects that compliance has on costs and benefits. However, without random assignment, it is difficult to assess the directly of causality.

So, we conducted a field experiment in Cambodia. We found that Better Factories Cambodia increased hourly pay, reduced work hours, improved life satisfaction and increased productivity. Hourly pay rose by more than productivity, indicating an increase in unit labor cost.

We applied survival analysis to determine whether social compliance increased the probability of firm survival. It did! Firm survival does not occur because socially compliant factories are rewarded by reputation sensitive buyers, pointing to efficiency effects of compliance.
