On Thursday 2nd July, we convened The AI Conversation: Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria – Balancing Regulation and Innovation.

The discussion reinforced something increasingly difficult to ignore: AI is no longer a conversation about the future. It is already reshaping how we live, work, make decisions, and deliver value.

As its influence grows, so does our responsibility to ask the right questions.

How do we encourage innovation while putting safeguards in place? What kind of legal and policy framework does Nigeria need to support responsible AI adoption? How do we address issues of privacy, accountability, bias, and the changing nature of work? And perhaps most importantly, what role should government, industry, academia, and civil society each play in building an AI ecosystem that benefits everyone?

These were some of the questions that guided our conversation.

One key takeaway stood out: innovation thrives where trust exists. Regulation should not be seen as a barrier to technological progress, but as a foundation that enables innovation to scale responsibly and sustainably.

We are grateful to our distinguished speakers for sharing their expertise and perspectives, and to everyone who joined us and contributed thoughtful questions and insights throughout the session.

We are delighted to welcome Sharon Okpo as a moderator at the T&A Legal AI Summit: The AI Conversation.

Sharon Okpo is a Senior Counsel at Tunde & Adisa Legal Practitioners (T&A Legal) in Lagos, where she is a key member of the corporate-commercial and data protection/privacy practice teams. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 2018, she has built expertise at the intersection of law, technology, and regulation, advising clients on data protection compliance under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, corporate transactions, and digital trade under the AfCFTA framework.
