Julia Roberts: Renee Nicole Goode is not a symbol. She is an American woman, a queer woman who was doing the very best she could do to be good in an unjust world.
And I am honored to celebrate her life and her legacy tonight, because the life she gave is our responsibility to carry.

One of my most popular articles ever included a long extract from a powerful closing speech by barrister Rajiv Menon during a Palestine Action trial in January. In the end, the jury refused to convict the six defendants.
Menon is now on trial for that closing speech ā for reminding the jury that they had a 350-year-old right in law to follow their conscience in reaching a verdict, even if it meant defying a direction from the judge to convict.
Paradoxically, Menon joked in his speech that, because of that earlier legal principle, the judge, unlike his counterpart in 1670, could not lock them, the jurors, up were they to choose to follow their consciences.
Instead, the judge is seeking to lock up the barrister. Does 2026 qualify as an improvement on 1670?
It is believed that this is the first time a barrister has been tried for comments made to a jury in his closing speech. That should serve as a potent reminder of just us how authoritarian the current political moment is, and of how quickly long-established legal rights are being dismantled to protect British collusion in genocide.

A year ago, I was moved to tears when govt agreed to consult on Council Tax debt collection. Iām reposting that video as today IT'S DONE. On the back of @mmhpi campaigning the govt said this morning it WILL change the rules
- Currently miss a monthly payment & within 3 weeks, you can be told "pay the whole year". From Apr 27, Councils must wait 63 days to do that & signpost people to help meantime
- The max added admin cost is also being capped at £100
Hereās my official quote on itā¦.
āCouncil Tax debt collection is so aggressive itād make banks blush. Itās the most vicious and damaging form of legal debt collection out there - causing counterproductive misery for millions. Weāve spent the last 18 months campaigning hard to change this hideous system, and having seen so much pain caused by it, Iām genuinely moved by this huge first step towards making things better.ā
āCurrently, in England, if you miss a monthly payment, many councils, within usually 3 weeks, demand payment for the entire year. How people who canāt find a monthās money are expected to find a yearās I donāt know. Yet if they canāt pay, within just three more weeks, they are often taken to court, have āadmin costsā added, and soon see bailiffs sent in. No commercial firm would be allowed to do anything close - constituents are treated worse than customers.ā
The new rule from next April means councils must wait two months, not 3 weeks, to ask for a yearās money, and the āadmin costsā will be capped at Ā£100. In a perfect world, it would be even longer and the lower cap would apply, but this is still a hugely welcome change to a 33-year-old process. For councils too, it is worth remembering that this grotesque system is often catastrophic for peopleās finances and wellbeing, leaving many needing more help and support, and ultimately the same council having to pick up the pieces.ā
