The "why" is because the FSD system is not good.

No lidar, no safety. It's pretty simple. This is why every other autonomous vehicle is not using image-only processing. Stop asking why and stop using FSD instead.

This could be disastrous because a train was actually coming, but that's why it's still supervised.

This is why it's full self driving in name only. Anyone in the industry not employed by Tesla would tell you this, and has been for some time. It's not truly capable of driving by itself, though I'm sure it does a generally good job of lane keeping in good weather and lighting.

Thank you for testing this! I’ve been convinced that I would clip cars, especially when it makes way too tight of left turns. I’ve probably disengaged 20+ times, because I’m positive I’d clip the car in the turn lane. Now you’ve confirmed this. Sucks you have to deal with the ramifications, but it lets the rest of us know not to trust that it will avoid a collision.
I’ve also almost clipped roadside equipment sticking out past the highway edge line. Hopefully the next update will greatly improve the vision capabilities!
