Data center construction spending just passed general office for the first time, $68B a year against $43B and climbing while office spending falls.
My Take
This is the single cleanest picture I've seen of where the money went. For a decade office construction was the baseline, the thing that just existed, tracking the economy up and down between $50B and $70B. Data centers barely registered. Now the office line is rolling over toward $43B and the data center line went vertical, $5B to $68B in the span where nobody was really watching the crossover happen.
The thing worth sitting with is that these are not two separate trends. They're the same trend. Companies stopped building places for people to work and started building places for machines to run. The capex that used to go toward desks and floors and parking now goes toward transformers and cooling and server racks. Every dollar on the orange line is a bet that the compute pays for itself, and I've spent months covering the reasons that bet keeps looking shakier, the funding holes, the delayed builds, the enterprises admitting the ROI doesn't close.
None of that shows up here. The chart doesn't know whether the spending works. It only knows the spending happened. What it shows is an economy that reallocated its physical build-out from workers to infrastructure in ten years, and did it fast enough that the crossover only just happened. If the compute delivers, this is the foundation of the next economy. If it doesn't, this is the most expensive overbuild in the history of the country, and it's sitting in concrete you can't repurpose.
