You can clearly see the ridges (keel) running along the vertebral scutes on the top of the carapace (upper shell) and the distinct contour lines across the skin like topography on a map. They often have serrated marginal scutes (around the rear outer edges of the shell).

This week we received reports of turtles wandering, digging or nesting. Finding soft sunny dirt patches but this female has dug a patch of lawn to uncover the soil underneath.

These animals need large pools to swim and move freely. They need a basking area and substrate, appropriate lighting, heating and filtration. If kept outside they need secure fencing to stop them from escaping. They live more 40 years, a huge commitment for a pet owner. #think

2019 - 2024, 1500+ turtles reported to us! Imagine how many more are living in ponds and lakes. Imagine if each turtle had an owner = 1500 people released these animals (or had an escapee). Education is needed when buying as a pet.
