“When politics overtakes due process, even institutions built to protect public trust can become vulnerable.”

In a deeply personal account, @drSaimaWazed describes what she calls her “year of professional exile” at the @WHOSEARO- after being placed on leave, facing allegations she disputes, and ultimately resigning from her position as Regional Director.

“I did not resign because I believed I had done anything wrong…”

She writes that an investigation into an alleged financial fraud claim was eventually closed after WHO’s Internal Oversight Services found the allegation “unsubstantiated.”

But her most serious concerns go beyond her own case:

“I have seen evidence suggesting that Dr Tedros communicated with Bangladesh’s interim authorities outside the channels one would normally expect…”

And she asks a question that extends far beyond her personal experience:

“Due process must mean the same thing for everyone.”

What happened behind the scenes at one of the world’s most important international institutions? Why did she spend almost a year without pay? And why, after the allegations were closed, did she conclude there was no meaningful path left for her at WHO?

Reports show only for his son’s involvement with Awami League, aged father Md Kalimuddin (60) has been picked up, tortured and taken away to police station from his residence by law enforcement team, marking a glaring testament to the brutal campaign to exterminate Awami League.

His son Rifat Ahmed has not been convicted in any crime. But just for this affiliation with Awami League, his father was picked up by law enforcement. Like him, millions of families remain vulnerable in the wake of repression as the state and Islamist forces waged a murderous campaign to vilify these families.

The extrajudicial ban on Awami League has become the weapon of murder and incarceration with impunity as UN and other rights bodies remain complicit in the worst ever human rights abuses unfolding in Bangladesh in the name of reform.

When Journalism Becomes a Crime

Bangladesh is facing a deeply troubling question: Can journalists be prosecuted simply for doing their jobs?

Three senior journalists - Mozammel Babu, Farzana Rupa, and Shyamal Dutta - have been ordered to remain in jail as they face charges linked to the July–August 2024 movement.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (@CPJAsia) has warned that editorial decisions and journalistic questioning must not be criminalised.

This case raises serious concerns about press freedom, due process, and the growing use of criminal charges against journalists in Bangladesh.

Journalism is not a crime.
Asking difficult questions is not a crime.
Holding journalists accountable for their reporting through criminal prosecution sets a dangerous precedent.

A democracy cannot thrive when journalists are jailed for asking questions.

Human Rights Watch Urges Bangladesh to End Prolonged Detention Without Trial of Political Prisoners

Recently, the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (@hrw ) called on the #Bangladesh government to immediately end the prolonged detention without trial of Awami League leaders, activists, and other political prisoners, according to a report published yesterday, August 23.

Key points from the report at a glance:

⛓️ Detention Without Trial: Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024, thousands of leaders, activists, supporters, and former officials were detained. Among them, hundreds are still in prison without any specific charges being formally brought against them.

⚖️ Police Tactics to Block Bail: Lawyers representing the detainees allege that when a court grants bail in one case, police immediately file new cases against them, preventing their release.

🏛️ Tribunal Situation: Under the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), more than 160 people have reportedly been held for prolonged periods without charges being formally framed—some for as long as 22 months.

🏥 Neglect of Medical Care: Families of detainees have alleged that prisoners are not receiving adequate medical treatment. Many elderly and ill detainees are reportedly living in inhumane conditions.

The August 21 grenade attack was one of the darkest episodes in Bangladesh’s political history. Twenty-four people were killed and more than 300 injured when grenades were hurled at an Awami League rally in Bangabandhu Avenue, in an attack aimed at Sheikh Hasina and the party’s top leadership.

What followed was equally disturbing: efforts to obstruct the investigation, destroy evidence, mislead investigators and shield those responsible. Years later, the trial resulted in convictions of senior political figures and officials over the attack and the subsequent cover-up.
The August 21 attack must not be reduced to another chapter of partisan political history. It was an attack on democratic politics itself—and a reminder of the devastating consequences when political violence, militancy and state power become intertwined.

We must remember the victims, demand accountability and ensure that such violence is never allowed to become a tool of political power again.
