Built to study dark matter, #antimatter, and the origins of the Universe, it is about to receive a major upgrade to dig deeper into the mysterious behaviour of high-energy cosmic rays – a new layer of sensors, to be added in 2026, will increase its cosmic-ray acceptance by approximately 300%.
This upgrade, driven by international collaboration and advanced engineering coordinated by CERN, demonstrates how Earth-based innovation fuels long-term scientific discovery in orbit.

Ephraim Ngoga and attended by H.E. Dr. Nancy Namrouqa, UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Sheri Ritsema-Anderson, and members of the diplomatic corps, the Rwandan community, and friends of Rwanda.

Here we see the @CMSExperiment rotating shielding, which has been successfully modified to receive new vacuum modules for the #HiLumiLHC.
The rotating shielding is an essential component situated at both extremities of the CMS experimental cavern. It protects the detector and its surroundings from the radiation from the particle collisions and the Large Hadron Collider accelerator.
This 110-tonne giant structure of steel and concrete surrounds the beampipe region when closed, and unfolds and rotates like a door to allow for maintenance operations around the vacuum chambers.

Today’s #PhotoOfTheWeek features the first series of cryogenic lines built at CERN for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider, completed earlier this month.
The #HiLumiLHC will rely on several key innovations in accelerator technology. These stainless steel lines are designed to bring liquid helium into the crab cavity cryomodules.
Crab cavities are an important piece of the #HiLumiLHC puzzle, made to maximise the overlap between the two proton beams at the collision points.
