TwitterListManager . com was from 2017 to Sept 2023 a site by @metawilm. Free, fast, bit weird, mighty. Saves you hours, so more time to toot the sousaphone.
The website https://t.co/95sceyD52d is in new hands: it now leads you to @circleboom's Twitter List Manager. My (@metawilm) involvement ends here. Thanks everyone, and good luck to Circleboom!
@JoanLM80@X I've the code of my site still lying around. But you'd need to pay for a Twitter API key and last time I looked, the $100/month one did not include the necessary features.
I'm shocked to announce that Twitter has shut off Small World's API access without advance warning of when it would happen
From talking to other app developers, many others have experienced the same rug pull of the Twitter API
Some background: A while ago, Twitter announced that they'd start charging for the formerly free API. Although I was bummed, that seemed reasonable โ I get that Twitter is a business, and it needs to make money
Notably, that pricing announcement did not include details on how much the API would cost (a pretty crucial detail to leave out of a pricing announcement...), but I assumed it would be something reasonable so I didn't worry about it much
When they announced the price a while later, I was shell shocked: $42,000/month! Since Small World enhances the Twitter experience and doesn't make any money, I reached out to their team to see if there was anything we could do to lower the price, but they firmly refused and pointed me to the $42,000/month tier. I didn't see a realistic path for turning this free, volunteer-run service into something that could consistently generate $42,000/month, especially not on a short timeframe, so I didn't see much of a choice but to shut down the little tool
I asked them the next logical question: when will Small World lose API access? They said they didn't know. This lack of organization was shocking to me, but I figured that they just hadn't decided on timing yet and that I'd get more info in a few weeks or months, at which point I'd have a chance to phase out Small World
So you can imagine my surprise when on Saturday night, just a few days after emailing with the Twitter team, I start noticing a stream of errors flooding Small World's server. Sure enough, Small World's API access had been cut off!
I emailed the Twitter team again to confirm that SW had actually lost access, since I'd never received a notification about it nor saw any alerts in my developer portal. They ignored my question and instead told me to post on the community forum moving forward rather than emailing them, which I took as a "yes your app is dead, fuck off"
So for now, Small World will stop working. If you already signed up, you'll still be able to see your existing friends' locations, but it won't update continuously. I'm going to do my best to find a way to get Small World working again. I'll keep you posted
If anyone on the Twitter team is open to exploring a solution that keeps small, volunteer-run tools like this up and running, I'd love to talk with you. I'm disappointed with how this has turned out, but I'm on team "let's make Twitter awesome!" just like you, so my DMs are open if there's anything I can do to help
@kcoleman how about integrating TwitterListManager into https://t.co/07AwKyxGh9? It's a much better List management tool than what you offer now! As Product VP it's all about delighting customers, no?
@maxclark I checked and can confirm that your single list edit action was not allowed by Twitter, the API response TLM got was indicating rate limiting. Seems a transient issue at Twitter side. Please try again!
@hsr_ds@_kaco Loading time depends a bit on how many lists you have... but should not take more than say a minute. Let me know if there seems to be a problem!
@walker_jjj You do need to click for each edit. But the UI letโs you keep clicking while the actions take place on the background. You may actually hit the Twitter API limit sooner than that you are out of click energyโฆ
@quackingduck@boriquagato Earlier, the option to register a key would only appear after you reached the limit of 50 list edits, and that behavior was indeed confusing!
