In the spirit of 4th of July, read this except from Nnamdi Azikiwe (the 1st President of Nigeria) reflecting on his time in America.
Opportunities in Nigeria under British colonial rule were limited. So in 1925, Azikiwe came by ship to the U.S for higher education. He was only 21 years old.
Life wasn’t easy for him in the new country. While there, he worked menial jobs to get by and pay for school. He also experienced discrimination & lived under segregation at the time.
But he gained so much too. He made lifelong friends, found mentors & discovered more of himself through public speaking, writing and taking on leadership roles at school.
When he left the U.S. 9 years later, he was moved to tears, writing, “My life is a testimonial that Americans shared life's pleasures and walked the honest road with me… I am a living witness”
These experiences shaped him & shaped Africa: He founded UNN (the first indigenous Nigerian university), modeled after the American education system. He started West African Pilot, a publication that revolutionized journalism & challenged colonial rule.
No, America wasn’t perfect, but his story reminds us that it has long been a place where people from anywhere can grow into their fullest potential through hard work & “pioneering” spirit.
America took a young man with no fortune or fame & helped shape him to someone who changed history.
As Azikiwe wrote, “It is only in the United States that any human being can live in a free environment which will give that individual full scope to develop his personality to the full, in spite of the vagaries of human life.”
To me, that's one of America's greatest strengths. For 250 years, it has never stopped re-examining itself, improving & growing. Here's to the next 250.
Happy America Day!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I have these two former colleagues of mine, Seun and Adaora.
Seun is married, and I also know his wife because we attended the same university.
I didn't have any issue with Adaora until she started bringing food for Seun at the office.
It started with, "Oh Seun, I brought you food today."
Before we say jack, it became, "Seun, what would you like me to prepare for you tomorrow?"
At that point, I knew where the whole thing was heading.
Seun was already feeling uncomfortable and didn't know how to handle it, so he came to meet me.
I asked him, "Why doesn't your wife prepare food for you to take to work?"
He replied, "My brother, I don use style tell her before, but she no even make any attempt."
I told him, "No worry, make I handle am."
I called his wife.
"Ayo, how far now?"
"Ah, Mr. Olamide! Good afternoon, sir."
After exchanging pleasantries, I got straight to the point.
"Ayo, you know say I be your person. I honestly think it's a good idea for you to start preparing food for Seun to take to work. I noticed that two different ladies bought him lunch twice last week."
She shouted "Ah!"
I replied, "What do you mean by 'Ah'? If you're packing food from home for him, do you think he'll even have room to be eating food from other women? Before you know it, one of them will start cooking for him regularly."
Within one week, my guy was showing up at the office every day with homemade food.
Sometimes they would pack some snacks for me too.
That was how Adaora's food ministry and Co. came to an end.
NYSC is a huge waste of time and should be made optional already. Wasted almost two years of my life from waiting for school posting to the end of the program.
I hate how relationships/friendships have become so fragile. We’ve become so unforgiving, ungraceful. “Sorrys” don’t cut it anymore. Stop judging your people by their bad days (alone).
I think we need to actually start being more graceful. God help me.
Same reason I upgraded esp after my phone died on an important trip where I was hoping to capture the memories and everybody around only had a USB-C ..
There’s guy in our street that met me in past weeks that he wants to swap iPhone 14 pro to 17 pro.
His reason is because whenever he’s out with his friends or he’s at their house and wants to charge, all of them only brings out USB. He said he must peel a new phone with USB-c to avoid see finish. Since there isn’t new 15 pro and 16 pro is scarce, he just waited for amount to add up and later peeled 17 pro. 😎😁😂 I too like people like this,
Waiting on God for a miracle can test you in so many ways, but remembering the other things he has done without fail gives us confidence that he will do this one too.
My heart goes out to every person doing business. It’s so hard to find decent staff: I’m not saying the staff should go above & beyond, just do your JOB! This Okpa distributor just found out his staff has been mixing chaff with the Okpa resulting in losses. So infuriating!
I miss her so page so much. Always included interesting backstories in her recipe posts. Almost all the delicacies I can cook, I owe to her - Ayamase, Banga, Atama, Oha, Onugbu, Afang, Lemongrass fried rice, Buka Stew. She’s really GOATED.
The Devil has two tricks up his sleeve.
1. Don’t worry, God isn’t going to be all that mad at you, you can always ask for forgiveness after.
Then you do the deed.
2. Boom, look at you, how can God possibly want anything to do with you again, you stink, go curve up into a ball in the corner and feel pity for yourself, your miserable self.
In these two cases, He distorts God: Lazy on holiness so he will forgive you, and too uptight, he doesn’t forgive.
A liar through and through.
