As we close out Women’s History month, I thought a lot about who I wanted to close with. My thoughts kept going back to a woman that has worked behind the scenes in saving many many lives.

Kizzmekia "Kizzy" Shanta Corbett-Helaire currently works as an assistant professor of immunology and infectious diseases at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Shutzer Assistant Professor at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute.

She is known for playing Jeezy in the lab, and wearing braids to PhD interviews. She believed it was a way of showing that Black people and Black culture absolutely belong in academic spaces. “We need to be ourselves and allow the institutions to shape around who we are.”
