@hendry_hugh I don't think the argument makes much sense. It's so much more than the relative size of the asset class that determines the trajectory. And all "steps" of that inverted period (except Bitcoin) have been in different spots through time. Cashflows & risk are leading long term.
@n0consensus@hendry_hugh The point is, it's not going to trade below cost of production. It will move within a range of production costs plus spread (margin) and that's what you use to decide when you'll take a seat at that table.
@n0consensus@hendry_hugh ... It's up there with the outliers. But it could go on for quite some time due to everything that's now going on in the world. You want to be in when that margin is near historical lows. I re- entered the sector about six years ago. Like Hugh says, look around the corner.
@n0consensus@hendry_hugh .. of the cost curve start going out of business. It's a "pig cycle" much like various other commodities. But it's getting longer and when the speculative demand comes in it overshoots. I haven't even looked at current margin (gold price-AISC/gold price) but I am pretty sure...
@n0consensus@hendry_hugh Just have a look at a long term industry AISC cost for gold and plot the gold price over it. Spot the outliers. Supply from production isn't very elastic. It takes very long to get a new mine into production. Basically when the spread gets to narrow, companies on the wrong end..
@hendry_hugh You can also go for convertibles which you can simply screen for in Bloomberg. There were good opportunities a couple years back. Limited downside (depending on security) and great upside if the cycle turns up. With margins expanded now is probably not the time.
@hendry_hugh But you could do well with a decent hand picked basket. Relatively safe jurisdictions, costs in the lower quarter of the cost-curve, long life of mine and get ten to twenty of these and buy before gold rallies. You can massively outperform with much less volatility than indices.
