I just got off the phone with a business owner in Mississippi. He’s pumped millions into a business distributing a product he imports from China. His contract with the company prevents him from manufacturing it in the U.S.

He also has contracts with a number of large retailers (Walmart, Walgreens, etc). He described some of those contracts as inflexible — requiring him to sell a unit at a set price. He told me he anticipates paying over $1 million in tariffs next week (as the 54% tariff kicks in) and has no ability to simply upcharge his retail customers to cover the expense.

In his words, “Russ, I don’t have 54% profit. This is put me out of business stuff.”

I share this because there are probably tens of thousands of businesses in similar situations. I just happened to have one reach out to me.

BREAKING: The Catholic Church escalates its all-out crusade on MAGA hatred as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops hits the Trump administration with a crushing lawsuit to protect refugee programs.

Trump and his so-called Christian followers are really in it for it now...

The USCCB filed the lawsuit in question to challenge Trump's likely illegal decision to block funding for refugee resettlement programs.

The suit aims to stop the the State Department from freezing funds that are supposed to flow to crucial local organizations that work in tandem with the federal government to support refugees as they arrive in America.

The USCCB is arguing that the administration's abrupt freezing of those funds in January violates the law. In particular, the Trump freeze circumvents Congress's Constitutional "power of the purse" in addition to numerous federal laws.

The lawsuit explains that the USCCB had 6,700 refugees assigned to it with the promise of funding from the federal government. The sudden freezing of that funding has left them unable to spend the millions of dollars necessary to run the program — which has in turn forced them to start firing employees.

Fifty employees at the USCCB's Migration & Refugee Services office have already been let go, accounting for over half of its resettlement staff.

The State Department had agreed to provide roughly $65 million for resettlement programs. The USCCB is still waiting on roughly $13 million in reimbursements. On top of that, they're owed $11.6 million that they need to pay out to sub-recipients as reimbursement.

6,758 refugees assigned to the USCCB were still in their 90-day transition period at the time of the funding freeze — and may soon be cut off entirely from support if the funds don't start flowing again.

"Refugees who have already entered the United States may soon be cut off from support, contravening the statutorily expressed will of Congress and making it more difficult for them to establish themselves as productive members of society," the suit reads.

The USCCB has worked with the federal government on refugee resettlement since 1980 and now runs the largest non-governmental refugee-resettlement program in the country. To date they have provided services to over 930,000 refugees.

"The fact that federal funding is integral to USCCB’s resettlement services is a direct result of congressional decisions about the design of the program and the appropriations directed it," the lawsuit states.

“And the uncertainty now surrounding the funding and USCCB’s partnership with the government will cause long-term, potentially catastrophic consequences to USCCB’s programs, as the substantial financial risk of partnering with the government to provide these services is too high if reimbursements can be arbitrarily and unlawfully suspended," it adds.

Once again, Donald Trump has bit off far more than he can chew. The Church is unambiguously in the right here morally and the law is on their side. The courts should immediately side with the bishops.
