@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals That cishet guy could totally say the same "their gender identity is different than mine, and therefore my attraction to them is hetero" just the same (if he had been so eloquent).
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals The thing about orientation identities is it's not just the subject's id, it's also the object's id.
I had a cishet man ask me out once like "I'm cool with you being nb as long as you don't have a ____".
His id is valid, and my feeling gross with how he perceived me is valid.
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals I feel like ultimately, we shouldn't tell anyone who they are and aren't attracted to, and we shouldn't tell anyone they have to feel represented when they don't.
Above all I hope we can all appreciate each other as allies as we navigate language politics together. ❤️
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals Correct. It feels categorically different to you but it doesn't feel categorically different to me. So it's 10000% valid as a self definition for a bisexual person, it's just not a place I would ever feel comfortable or seen in when people tell me it includes me.
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals I apologize, my analogy should be: id-ing as Earthling when someone is attr to "Americans AND everyone else". But see if I id as Earthling, that doesn't exclude America. An orientation with lines can't fit the whole person outside the lines, even if ppl find my body hot.
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals I've heard that, and bisexual people have a right to self identity. As an nb I don't feel fundamentally exclusive to any gender so if someone draws a line between "me vs other", that means whatever overlap I have across those lines sounds like it's perceived as split in 2 parts.
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals ( in case anyone reading is confused: That was an analogy for the sake of illustration. Irl I'm American and I accept my responsibility to fix some f'ed up stuff we're doing. )
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals As an analogy: imagine if I don't identify with nations but instead with a continent. If someone says "I'm attracted to Americans AND Canadians" and they insist that includes me, I feel still do not feel seen.
@cammyboig@LuvBisexuals To clarify, I'm not saying it's wrong to be bi. I'm just saying I don't feel seen as my whole self by a bisexual person even if they are attracted to me.
@LuvBisexuals As an nb, I don't feel included in a linguistic binary. I accept that you're attracted to NBs, but don't expect me to FEEL inclined in "bi" when I'm "non-BI-nary". It's a political struggle for us too. We're constantly asked to be ok with terms that linguistically contradict us
