Top Senate budget negotiator @SenLouiseLucas says, "We’re getting close to an agreement on how to pay for core services," and Virginia "will have a budget before June 30th."
The good news is that we’re getting close to an agreement on how to pay for core services. We will have a budget before June 30th and you can take that to the bank!
Earlier today, when talking about retail marijuana, Delegate Paul Krizek, who is a budget conferee, said, "The conferees haven't met on the budget yet."
When asked about @lashrecseaird and @KrizekForVA saying they would like language in the budget to create a legal recreational marijuana market, a spokesperson for @GovernorVA sent me the following statement:
“Governor Spanberger has made clear that she supports setting up a legal retail marketplace for cannabis that prioritizes the health and safety of Virginians, protects communities and consumers, and operates with clear enforcement and regulatory authority.”
New: @lashrecseaird and @KrizekForVA say they would like to see language to create a legal recreational marijuana market in the budget.
They say they aren’t trying to ram anything down anyone’s throat and that they want things to be collaborative with @GovernorVA.
Krizek and Aird say they haven’t met with the governor’s office, but are willing to compromise on certain provisions.

Happening Now: The Joint Commission to Oversee the Transition of the Commonwealth into a Cannabis Retail Market (which has to be a record for the longest commission name) is meeting for the first time since @GovernorVA vetoed legislation to create a retail market for the sale of recreational marijuana.
Happening Now: Virginians for Marriage Equality is launching its statewide campaign in favor of a proposed constitutional amendment to protect same-sex marriage in the Virginia Constitution.
Currently, Virginia's Constitution bans same-sex marriage, however, that ban is unenforceable due to federal court rulings.
It’s important to note that the code section @GovernorVA used to remove VT Rector John Rocovich says in part, “The Governor is the sole judge of the sufficiency of the cause for removal.”
In her letter, @GovernorVA said Rocovich's conduct "has violated the Code of Conduct for Commonwealth Appointees to Boards, Authorities, & Commissions, the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors’ Code of Ethics, and the governing statutes requiring board members to act in accordance with the best interests of Virginia Tech.”
Spanberger said that’s sufficient cause for her to remove Rocovich under a code section that says, “the Governor may remove from office for malfeasance, misfeasance, incompetence, or gross neglect of duty any member of the board of any public institution of higher education.”
After asking for specifics, I have been told by the Governor's office that at this time, there will be no further explanation on why Governor Abigail Spanberger removed John Rocovich as Virginia Tech's Rector.
Spanberger's letter said Rocovich's conduct "has violated the Code of Conduct for Commonwealth Appointees to Boards, Authorities, & Commissions, the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors’ Code of Ethics, and the governing statutes requiring board members to act in accordance with the best interests of Virginia Tech.”
In a letter obtained by @CardinalNewsVA and @memangrum, John Rocovich fired back at Governor Abigail Spanberger.
Rocovich said, “I have committed no
malfeasance. I have not been derelict in my duties. I have attended meetings, fulfilled my obligations, and acted at all times in the best interests of Virginia Tech.”
