I was staring blankly at a certificate expiration date for a server I maintain now.
After incorporating its renewal into all my emotional baggage, I realized its expiration year.

Hopefully it will be someone else's problem by then and I can stop worrying about it.

Two decades ago, my coworker and I made a 20-iMac high school video lab where all footage was stored and edited (iMovie 2) directly on a shared network volume served from an Xserve and Xserve RAID.
It was so much more responsive than local ATA or FireWire disks and a joy to use.

@sigma_da_enigma @rynbutterworth lol, there was a period of time where you could edit the BootX logo rather easily. I changed it to our organization’s logo for the 10.2.x fleet I managed in 2002/2003.

@sigma_da_enigma Oops! You’re right on launchd. I could’ve sworn they did something to SystemStarter in 10.2 to speed up boot, but I can’t recall what anymore. It’s all blending together now :)

1: The "hello" was not i18n friendly.
2: As part of the BootX process, it just delayed kernel loading and made boot times longer, when Apple was just bringing up launchd to accomplish the opposite.

Years ago, I hunted through my old burnt CDs years ago, but came up empty :(

@NanoRaptor The internal vacuum was a trick to lower unit weight.
Rather than use Hydrogen which caused testing…”difficulties”, engineers decided to try the opposite.
Unfortunately, thermal runaway (due to a lack of air flow) caused instant throttling.
Also implosions due to “tampering”.

And hey, that's exactly the case!
You can still use the networksetup tool to create and delete Locations in Ventura.
scselect is still available, but even better, creating multiple Locations brings back the "Location" Apple submenu!

Whelp. Seems macOS’ long-standing Network Locations feature is gone, and not coming back.
Its absence in Ventura is “as designed”.

The command-line scselect tool still exists (though manual editing of SystemConfiguration.plist is NOT for humans…), so there’s a possibility this feature could still live on as a Terminal-only “featurette”.

…And given its target audience, that might be just fine.
