@csx556 @RacingInCircle @IndyCarOnFOX The UAK18 has crashed like this for 7 years. The bodywork produces zero sideforce and the rear wing plummets in downforce when it gets into yaw.

@Chad__15 @alfvebe @DLand91 Obviously this doesn’t happen, but it’s possible which is the problem.

The much more logical solution is to not delete the times of any bumped cars. That way if you withdraw your time and crash or go slower, the P31 car becomes P30

@Chad__15 @alfvebe @DLand91 So here’s a hypothetical situation just to show why the current system is illogical. Alex Palou pulls his time in lane 1, crashes. Now nobody is P30. Jacob Abel goes in lane 1 and puts up a speed of 223 mph right as the clock runs out. Now he’s in the field as a day 1 qualifier

Go back and watch the highlights from the 2021 Indy 500 qualifying day 1. Dalton Kellett withdraws his time from inside the top 30 and puts up a time that SHOULD be 32nd. But because P31-P34 times are DELETED, he goes P30 and qualifies

@Chad__15 @alfvebe @DLand91 No, that’s my entire reason for saying it’s dumb. I believe it was a few years ago Charlie Kimball withdrew his time and went SLOWER than the person who was in “31st” but because that time no longer exists, they went 30th and the “bumped” car was still bumped.

If someone within the top 30 pulls their time right at the end of the day and crashes, who is P30? Nobody

Graham ran a 230 mph run but is now not classified. If I’m 25th and withdraw my time but run 140 mph for a 4-lap average, I now go P30. They can’t wave me off, I’m guaranteed to make a qualifying run that puts me in the field
