@CarolineLindey Thank you so much, @CarolineLindey!! I so appreciate it. Can’t wait to see you soon in A2. 🫡 Of course please feel free to DM or email anytime before that if I can be helpful!!
Proud of newly-minted Dr. Tyler Simko, who just successfully defended his dissertation, “Geographic Policy Evaluation in US State and Local Politics” — Hooray, @tylersimko!
New Jersey’s “county line” ballot design distorts voter choice by giving party-preferred candidates privileged positions on the ballot. @ProfNickStephan and I have an Op-Ed today @NJSpotlightNews arguing that voters should support eliminating the system: https://t.co/2Vmaj34xT3
Like the #NationalChampionship, I am also headed to the University of Michigan! Incredibly excited to start as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at @UMich.
I’m so grateful to my friends, colleagues, and advisors who made this and all of our work possible. 〽️
@KevinTMorris Have gone down a similar rabbit hole before for a project on teachers: haven’t seen many ages (though some state lawsuits on whether you can FOIA them). But some have name, location, and retirement date. I’ve collected some before, feel free to DM / email, love to talk more.
@tylersimko and I are excited to announce a new version of 🏠LocalView🏙️ updated with meetings until September 2023. Additionally, we've built a dashboard on our site so you can now search for / visualize keyword trends in public meetings.
Check it out!

@KevinTMorris I’ve started defining a few common objects I put in every local project .Rprofile, which makes them available as global variables. Election dates, FIPS codes, etc. Super convenient!!
@ArunFrey@APSAtweets@SoubhikBarari Thank you!! Yes, absolutely remember (and still thankful for) your very kind comments on our poster. Hope it will be useful for your work.
@cbarrie@ArunFrey@APSAtweets@SoubhikBarari Amazing, please share when you do! Would love to see. We’d have officially come full circle on LocalView — version 0.01 started several years ago as a course project!
🚨📄 out now in @nature@ScientificData with @tylersimko:
https://t.co/R5wDlCyUUM
We introduce LocalView: a comprehensive dataset of over 100,000 real-time U.S. local government public meeting videos from 1,000+ localities (and counting). 🧵 1/5
@matt_blackwell@shirokuriwaki You could also edit and host on a Colab notebook — they scale really well for small / mid-sized analysis because students make a copy of an R-enabled jupyter notebook to their own gmail account. I’m using it now for ~100 person course with no issues. Happy to share examples.
@matt_blackwell Ahh very cool - thanks! For really tricky ones, testthat::compare() will do something similar and show where mismatches happened. Can be useful for hint error messages.
@Isaac_es_Felix I just finished my first year, and I’d be happy to help in any way (talk more, look over application materials, answer questions, etc). Feel free to reach out and good luck!!
@Isaac_es_Felix I’ll echo what others have said about not putting all your eggs in one basket. Look out for fee waivers (deadlines were often earlier than I thought) and apply to at least a few schools (some visits might pleasantly surprise you!).
