People are wanting the old regime back.

In 2017/18, we finished outside of the top 4, almost 30 points behind Man City. Sacked the manager.

In 2018/19, we scrapped top-4 in matchday 37, again finishing 25 points behind Man City. Sacked the manager.

In 2019/20 we scrapped top 4 matchday 38 finishing 33 points behind Liverpool.

In 2020/21 we scrapped top 4 matchday 38 because another team lost. We finished 19 points behind Man City. Sacked the manager in January. We did win the CL but that obviously papered over the cracks.

In 2021/22 we secured top 4 in matchday 36, finishing 19 points behind Man City.

In this time we played 6 domestic finals and we won 1 and lost 5.

We had a squad assembled for and by 4+ different managers with WILDLY different principles of play. We had a MASSIVE wage budget that was way out of control.

In short, we were about 25 points off the Premier League title for 5 consecutive seasons, we lost 5 of 6 domestic cup finals and had a squad incapable of dominating.

Bringing me to the new ownership.

They come in and they want to make us consistently able to compete for all available trophies. That's a big gap to close looking at the numbers from the last 5 seasons of the past ownership.

Complete change of the board, the directors who had assembled this completely unorganized squad, the scouting team who didn't have a nano-byte of data on any single player.

The squad needed to be completely nuked and rebuilt from scratch.

The wage bill needed to be trimmed and incentives were added to contracts for obvious reasons.

Ever heard the saying "it gets worse before it gets better"? That's not coming out of thin air.

The owners came in with little to no time to prepare for the transfer window with insane pressure from the outside wondering what kind of owners they were going to be. They also made a promise to Roman to invest heavily in the team.

We didn't have any sporting directors at the time so the owners had to trust the football guy that was there. Thomas Tuchel, famously known for NOT having a great talent ID.

Tuchel was eventually sacked because he had a fallout with the owners. Our owners brought in Graham Potter. This was done prior to the appointment of out current SDs.

The job Potter had on his hands was impossible and was made even more impossible by a January transfer window that saw an already bloated squad adding 7 players to it while removing 1.

Eventually, Potter, who was not an SD pick, was sacked and Lampard was brought in to appease the fans as the season was over anyway and there was nothing to play for.

To emphasize how difficult of a job this was in Lampard's words:

Practically the whole squad either knew they were leaving after the season or were deeply unsure about their own future. The consequence of this in addition to the squad having 33 players expecting consistent game time in it, was a bunch of players on mental vacation since March, and probably earlier in some cases.

The summer of 2023 was the second of the "4 window plan" reported by @David_Ornstein. This was the first summer window for the SDs.

This was the summer we saw a BIG exodus of players and many more incomings joining us. We also hired Poch, which admittedly turned out to be a wrong decision in hindsight.

One can assume the idea behind it was to keep him for a couple of years while he developed our young players and prepared the team for "the right guy". After all, he had a proven track record of developing young players into a team and had even done it in the Premier League.

Moving on to the season as a whole. We started this season with basically a whole new team, most of which were under-23s. No player relations to rely on and very little experience. A difficult job for any manager.

Now, we spent most of the season struggling around 10th. Made it to another domestic final, which we lost.
