Last year, I joined the first cohort @typeafrika to develop my typeface, Ijoko Display. I was thrilled to be tutored by @jobosonchisa and to learn alongside incredible peers. I’m super excited to continue exploring, developing, and eventually publishing Ijoko Display.
Recently, I had the opportunity to learn from one of Africa’s leading type designers, and it was an incredible experience. Learning with @jobosonchisa helped me truly understand the thinking behind building a typeface, and how fun, deep and intentional the process can be. Funny enough, when you work in Design for a long time, you sometimes forget why you fell in love with it in the first place. These six weeks were a powerful reminder of exactly that.
It was a solid class, with half a dozen excited students, a very supportive teacher, and real space to experiment. I even got back into sketching, exploring different typefaces and starting to build something special. This journey was essential to the development of my own typeface, which I am still unsure about naming, and to reconnecting with the joy of designing for fun.
Thank you @jobosonchisa for reminding me what it feels like to design, and what it truly means to create with African mindset and intent. I’ll continue refining and expanding this typeface, and soon I will release a free version for everyone to enjoy.
What do you think about Africa typography and typography as a whole? Have you ever thought about designing your own typeface?
I will be overseeing @TypeAfrika’s “Intro to Type Design for Africans” workshop this October & November, where I teach the fundamentals of type design to African type enthusiasts and help them create their first font!
