I miss being a menace in Battlefield. Hopping on every night and just casually fragging out and sharing that fun with the community was such a highlight. Having large-scale pubs where you can do almost anything was such a vibe.

I actually went down to get a 2026 M2 CS they had in that Velvet Blue metallic color. The one that looks like a blue/purple pearlescent color. Of course they sold it hours before I got there. I was looking at another M2 but then right next to it was that 2026 M3 Comp. They had JUST gotten it in. I can’t even pick it up until Tuesday because they didn’t even have the title in hand yet.

With original CS, the primary online league was called CAL, and it had a corresponding LAN tournament called CPL. CPL ran twice a year, but had an open registration for teams that wanted a shot, even if it was a long one, in case they didn’t make the qualifiers into the main bracket. Teams in CAL-Invite (the highest online division) could get automatic berths into the main bracket as well, so that acted as an entry point. This gave the lower divisions a reason to fight up into Invite, even beyond the prestige of being in a division with the top teams. The other tournaments Thorin mentioned didn’t have open registration, BUT they did have open QUALIFIERS, and it was always a blast to watch teams go for their cindarella story.
The control Valve has now and the fact that teams are locked to invite only is part of the reason (at least more so in the US) that online leagues have floundered in comparison to the old days. Players are mercenaries just playing for themselves looking for an opportunity to stand out and get picked to play for a team who is sponsored and has the invites.
It’s created such a horrible barrier for up and coming teams, and changes player focus to be more worried about their own performance than gaining team building skills.

And that fact is what helped make the scene thrive at all levels!

CS:GO fans don't realise huge tournaments were normal in CS 1.6 at CPL, ESWC and WCG. Those weren't invitation tournaments.

@ExoGhost Trust me I wish my kids could have the same experiences I had. Everything about it was better. The publishers, the games, the multiplayer experience.
The one difference now is that parents are way more supportive 😂
