One of my friends asked “Why do you pay so much money for your kids to play sports?? Well I have a confession to make; I don’t pay for my kids to do sports. Personally, I couldn’t care less about what sport they do.
So, if I am not paying for football what am I paying for?
– I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don’t.
– I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are “too tired” to go to their training but they go because they love it and their part of a team.
– I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined, focused and dedicated.
– I pay for my kids to learn that exercise is so important to a healthy lifestyle and to take care of their body and equipment.
– I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates, gracious in defeat and humble in success.
– I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don’t get that result they’d hoped for, but still they go back week after week giving it their best shot.
– I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals.
– I pay for my kids to respect, not only themselves, but other players, officials and coaches.
– I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours, years and years of hard work and practice to create a champion and that success does not happen overnight.
– I pay for my kids to be proud of small achievements, and to work towards long term goals.
– I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships, create lifelong memories, to be as proud of their achievements as I am.
– I pay so that my kids can be out on the pitch instead of in front of a games console
The role of a coach is a thankless task
Why would anyone do it? You have to ask......
No long lie ins at the weekend, busy evenings midweek,
Kids misbehaving and giving you cheek
Parents who don’t reply to a text,
but are usually first to ask “What’s happening next week”
Juggling work with preparing the next training session,
Emails and paperwork, too much to mention
The fees, planning matches and sorting out kit,
There are times being a coach can be totally SH…ambolic
Irregular mealtimes – cue complaints from a spouse,
Who ends up doing everything else in the house
The rearranged plans, endless meetings it seems,
Is it really worth coaching that player or team?
There really are so many reasons galore,
To just avoid coaching and go on and roar
From the sidelines with all of the families and fans,
But you have the calling and a mind full of plans
Yes, it takes dedication from someone special indeed,
To give up their time to help others succeed
But when you realise your hard work has not been in vain,
When little Connor or Katie are top of their game
Months of hard work coming through to fruition,
You can see the results after all that tuition
A player or team being the best they can be,
Is all the reward that you need to see
To all coaches we thank you, to us it’s so clear,
Without all of you, none of us would be here.
There will be a crowd display on the John Street stand as the players come out of the tunnel today. 🙌
Supporters are asked to raise the pieces of card left on their seats as the Bladesmen enter the field. 👊
Today is National Volunteer Day,
We would like to give a MASSIVE #Shoutout to every single volunteer who makes the game happen. Grassroots Football would not exist if it wasn’t for the efforts of our volunteers. Thank you for everything you all do.
