🇳🇴 Norway is using its influence inside soccer to push for Israel’s suspension from FIFA, Politico reports.

Led by Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness, the campaign makes the case that FIFA’s ban on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine exposes a double standard as Israel continues its assault on Gaza.

The report says Norway’s support has helped move the campaign into Europe’s soccer mainstream and Klaveness, a former national team player and lawyer on UEFA’s executive committee, is pressing the case through formal institutions.

The Palestinian Football Association’s effort, launched in 2024, cites Israel’s atrocities in Gaza, discrimination against Arab athletes, and the inclusion of clubs based in illegal West Bank settlements.

When Norway hosted Israel in a World Cup qualifier last October, the federation donated all match proceeds to Gaza relief. Fans displayed Palestinian flags, keffiyehs, and a banner reading: “Let Children Live.”

(Norway briefly led 1-0 after a 36” strike against England in its World Cup quarterfinal match today. The game is currently tied 1-1 with about ten minutes to go.)

Now we learn the White House made a direct call to FIFA asking Infantino to review Balogun’s red card.

FIFA insists the decision was handled by an independent disciplinary panel and could not be influenced externally.

But how is a direct call from a government to FIFA over a player’s suspension not, at the very least, political interference?

🇵🇸 The Palestinian Football Association announced the killing of Saleem Khader Al-Ashqar, 32, goalkeeper for Khadamat Khan Younis club, shot by Israeli army fire Monday in the town of al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Al-Ashqar, who also played for Gaza’s Al-Aqsa and Al-Musaddar clubs, had married five months ago and was awaiting the birth of his first child. He was reportedly the only son in his family among seven sisters.

His killing brings the number of Palestinian sports figures killed since the start of the genocide to 1,009, including 567 from the football community, according to the association, which has filed a complaint with FIFA seeking Israel’s expulsion.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, as he left Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday, declined to say “Free Palestine,” telling a streamer instead that Palestine “doesn’t exist.”

Rep. Omar pointed out what she viewed as a painful irony, saying that as a Jewish man whose people suffered through the Holocaust, Seinfeld should recognize the dangers of genocidal rhetoric aimed at wiping out or denying the existence of a whole group.

She described him as a "horrific human being" for dismissing the reality of the catastrophe in Gaza. “Be a human. Care about other people. And Palestinians do exist. They are real people. They are ethnic to the land in which they belong,” Omar said.
