Fact #5- Black History in Sports: Althea Gibson was the first black athlete to compete in International Tennis and the first black women to win a Grand Slam title. Her career totals 11 Grand Slam wins .🏆

Fact #4-Black History in Music: Born a slave, George Washington Johnson became the first African American musician to make commercial records🎼His contribution to music history mostly ignored, Johnson’s “The Laughing Song” was added to the National Recording Registry in 2014.

Fact #3-Black History in Dance: Buddy Bradley, born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1908, was a powerful force in Britain musicals and revue. Bradley was the first black dancer to work on an all white show, Rogers and Hart’s “Evergreen” the musical.

Fact #2- Black History in Theater: William Wells Brown wrote the first known black play, “Escape; or, A Leap to Freedom”. Originally published in 1858, the play was not produced until 1971 at Emerson College.

Fact #1-Where it all started: Black History Month began as “Negro History week”, created by African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher, Carter G. Woodson in 1926. It became a month long celebration in 1976.
