Today marks the fourth official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. While the national holiday is only four years old, Orange Shirt Day has been observed since 2013.

Why do we wear orange today?

The original orange shirt belonged to Phyllis Webstad, who proudly wore her new orange shirt on her first day at a church-run residential school in Williams Lake, BC.

School authorities stripped her of her clothes, cut her hair, and she would never see her orange shirt again.

After dedicating herself to a healing journey, Phyllis created Orange Shirt Day. “The colour orange has always reminded me of how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared.”

Webstad is one of more than 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children who attended Indian residential schools in Canada between the late 1800s and 1996. Each survivor, their children, and their grandchildren deserve to feel seen and heard.

We wear orange to acknowledge the trauma and pain. We wear orange to honour the lives lost. We wear orange because Phyllis, and thousands of others, were made to feel like their lives didn’t matter.

They do matter. Today, we wear orange as a way to show every child that they matter.
