UKAI unites UK AI businesses, shaping government dialogue and driving innovation to keep the UK at the global forefront of transformative AI technology.
Pleasure to join @UKAIofficial House at @sxswlndn on the responsible AI: ethics, equity and the environment panel, alongside @LaraLewington, Matt Holmes and Polly Milne.
Key insights:
👉 Ethics, equity, and the environment are not separate pillars but a single system. If we fail on equity, we fail on ethics. If we ignore the environment, there is no future to be responsible for.
👉Organisations must invest in effective AI evaluation frameworks to build operational accountability through audit trails, third-party testing, public impact assessments, complaints mechanisms, and liability.
👉 Green AI and sustainability should be design constraints. Efficiency should not be an excuse to ignore scale; the cumulative carbon and water cost of AI models is significant.
👉 Choosing between short-term profit and responsibility is a false choice. Long-term commercial survival depends on trust, and trust is built through responsibility.
👉 UK can take the lead in responsible, ethical, and trustworthy AI globally by adopting binding, verifiable international standards and implementing agile, adaptive AI regulation to keep pace with rapid advances in AI.

Key takeaways:
💡 It is essential to utilise UK AI companies, especially when handling sensitive patient data, to ensure the UK’s AI sovereignty.
💡NHS data is a valuable asset, but accessing it can be too time-consuming. We need to focus on practical changes to expedite and simplify trusted data use for AI developers, whilst complying with data privacy regulations.
💡Many AI tools are currently purchased as one-off pilots rather than being integrated into routine care. The NHS needs to consider revising procurement rules to reward AI that genuinely improves patient outcomes rather than simply offering the lowest upfront cost.
💡 The UK boasts excellent life science researchers but lacks sufficient AI engineers working within hospitals. We need to support AI specialists working directly on clinical wards.
