🚗 Balancing Independence and Road Safety: Supporting Our Aging Drivers

Mobility equals independence. For mature motorists, driving isn't just about getting from A to B - it's about staying connected to communities, maintaining independence, and preserving quality of life.

However, as we age, natural physical changes can impact our time behind the wheel. Gradual shifts in peripheral vision, slower reaction times, and changes in spatial judgment mean that staying safe requires proactive awareness, not just from drivers themselves, but from families and policy-makers alike.

Rather than waiting for a crisis or a forced licence revocation, families and professionals need the conversation to shift toward a more proactive approach. Discussing when to stop driving with an elderly relative is hard. Starting early and well before issues arise is a good place to begin. Open conversations that normalise dialogue within families about health, medication impacts, and subtle changes in driving comfort are all helpful.

You are not alone. Organisations like the Older Drivers Forum do fantastic work providing practical advice, resources, and host regular webinars and events designed specifically to help people stay on the road safely for as long as possible.

🚗💨 The Real Cost of Ignoring Your Tyres

Did you know UK drivers collectively waste an estimated £1 billion every year on fuel simply because of underinflated tyres?

When your tyres aren't properly inflated, your engine has to work harder, burning extra fuel and hitting your wallet where it hurts - all while reducing your grip on the road.

Taking 5 minutes to check your pressures doesn't just keep you safe when you need to brake suddenly; it stops you from literally burning cash on your daily commute.

Check your vehicle manual or in car sticker for the correct PSI.
Give your tyres a quick lookover before your next long trip.

As the price of fuel continues to climb keep your hard-earned money in your bank, not escaping through your exhaust pipe.

🎮 Real Life Doesn’t Have a Reset Button

In gaming, we take risks because we know we can just hit "respawn" and try again. Made a mistake? Learn the map, try a different strategy, and go again.

But in real life? There are no respawns. 🛑

Road safety campaigns like "There are no respawns" created by Sussex Safer Roads Partnership brilliantly bridge a vital message across to younger drivers and communities by using gaming culture to highlight a sobering truth: when you’re behind the wheel, distractions, speeding,or taking shortcuts aren't just "game over"—they are permanent.

Whether you're commuting to the office, driving home from a late-night session, or heading out for the weekend:

📱 Put the phone down.
⏳ Slow down—arriving late beats not arriving at all.
🍺💉 Stay away from alcohol and drugs
👀 Stay hyper-focused on the road.

Let’s keep the risks in the virtual world and keep our roads safe for everyone.

Rain on the road? It's your tyres that keep you safe.

🌧️ With the autumn well under way we have wetter weather and road conditions have changed. While modern cars have amazing safety features, their performance ultimately comes down to that single contact patch; your tyres.

In heavy rain, a worn tyre can significantly lose grip, leading to aquaplaning and much longer braking distances. Don't leave your safety to chance.

This autumn, take a few moments to do a quick ACT check.
1️⃣ Check your tyre pressure. (A for Air)
2️⃣ Inspect for any damage or cuts. (C for Condition)
3️⃣ Check tread depth. Use a 20p coin to be sure. (T for Tread)

ACT now. A simple check can make all the difference. Stay safe on the roads!

October is #TyreSafetyMonth 🚗💨

Your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road. Their condition is absolutely vital to your braking distance and steering control. When did you last check yours?

Regular maintenance is quick and easy. Just remember to ACT:

A – Air pressure: Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended level.

C – Condition: Inspect the sidewalls for any bulges, cuts, or embedded objects like nails.

T – Tread: Check that your tread depth meets the legal minimum (1.6mm in the UK) to maintain grip.

Don’t put it off until tomorrow. ACT now. It takes less than 5 minutes and could save your life.

If you aren't sure what to look for, pop into your local garage or tyre specialist—they will be happy to check them for you!

As daylight hours shorten moving into September, low sun, glare, and wet roads will expose hidden vision problems.

Eyesight deterioration is slow to the extent you may not notice it and just learn to cope... and that's a big danger area. Do a self check. Can you read a car registration plate 20 metres away? If you can't or it's not as sharp as it should be then you need to get an eyesight test booked immediately.

[UKROEd @UKROEd]

In some areas the schools are already back but for most areas the schools reopen this week. Traffic volume and pedestrian activity around drop off and pick up time will increase. Factor in a little extra time for your journey. Avoid driving past schools if you can. Most importantly for those who have to drive to school for drop off/collection; park wisely and safely, always have children alight on the footpath side of the car (not into the road), drive slowly (20 is plenty) and be uber vigilant for children crossing between parked cars.

[UKROEd @UKROEd]

Has the rain arrived for you yet? If not it's coming and there could well be lots of it.

Our gardens and fields will love it but the roads less so. If you're driving in the wet remember;

1. After a long hot period the roads will be greasy and slippery increasing the risk of collisions. Increase separation distance and brake more gently for longer.

2. If particularly heavy then rain will make driving conditions difficult and water will pool in low spots. (avoid standing water - it hides pot holes and there's a risk of loss of control through aquaplaning)

3. If your wipers are on then your headlights must be on too (not just DRL's but dipped beam)

Do you know what VLT is?

If you don't then read on. The wearing of sunglasses by drivers has many positive benefits. They protect your eyes from harmful UV light, they reduce strain on your eyes and thereby reduce fatigue and can help you maintain good vision in very bright conditions. You might just look at little cooler too!?

VLT is 'visible light transmission' - this is the amount of light the lenses actually let through. Lenses are graded as category 0 to 4 with the latter being the darkest with the lowest VLT percentage. Whilst most sunglasses are perfectly fine for day time use many would not be recommended for night time use. Lenses that are category 4 (essentially for alpine conditions, glaciers, sailing etc) would be illegal for use on the roads both at night AND during the day. So make sure you are certain your sunnies are safe for driving.
