Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine on the night of September 1, using missiles and a significant number of drones.

At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured across the country. Among those killed was a citizen of India.

Seven people were killed when a Russian strike hit a railway depot in Kyiv. In Boryspil, Kyiv region, four people were killed and 13 injured. A residential five-storey building was damaged, and 50 people had to be evacuated. Other civilian and industrial infrastructure was also hit.

Odesa and the surrounding region were attacked with drones and guided aerial bombs. Thousands of families were left without electricity, while Russian strikes also damaged an international border crossing with Romania and export infrastructure.

Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy and Dnipro regions also came under attack.

Every additional air defence system and every new package of military assistance saves lives. Continued and increased support for Ukraine as part of PURL and bilateral agreements is urgently needed.

At least 9,796 people have become victims of enforced disappearance as a result of Russia’s war against Ukraine since 2014, according to human rights defenders.

The real number may be significantly higher, as Russia conceals information about missing people, while many cases cannot be identified and documented.

But 9,796 is not just a number. It represents people whose fate and whereabouts remain unknown. It also means thousands of families waiting for news about their loved ones.

An enforced disappearance occurs when a person is deprived of their liberty by a state representative, or with the state’s permission, support or consent, followed by a refusal to acknowledge the detention or disclose what has happened to them or where they are.

This practice leaves people outside the protection of the law and their families trapped in uncertainty – often for months or years.

On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we want to make the scale of this crime visible. The comparisons in this carousel help us grasp the number. But no stadium, place or event can convey what this number means for each person who disappeared and for those still waiting for them.

People are not numbers. Every case must be investigated. Every person must be found.

The international community must continue to do everything possible to ensure that Russia is held accountable for enforced disappearances and other crimes committed during its war against Ukraine.

Remembering those who gave their lives for Ukraine is part of our lives. 

Today is the Day of Remembrance for Ukraine’s fallen defenders – a day that reminds us of the huge price of freedom. But remembrance lives through many more ways – in the way we speak their names, honour them in our cities, and pass their stories on to others.

Efforts to deal with the aftermath of Russia’s attack on our regions have been underway since last night. It was a combined strike – drones and ballistic missiles. The Russians struck critical infrastructure in the Poltava, Sumy, and Kherson regions. In the Kharkiv region, they struck residential buildings. In Kramatorsk, a guided aerial bomb hit a high-rise building. Four people were rescued by the State Emergency Service units. Three people were injured in Zaporizhzhia, and two in Kryvyi Rih. An apartment building was struck in Odesa. In Chubynske, Kyiv region, all the necessary emergency services are involved in putting out fires at enterprises following the drone strikes.

Russia continues to invest in missiles and in expanding its war, and that means more countermeasures are needed. This week, our European allies made important decisions to strengthen Ukrainian air defense. It is important that these are also supplemented by additional ballistic missile defense packages, first and foremost through PURL. Everything that strengthens the protection of our skies effectively saves the lives of Ukrainians every day. To bring down Russia’s desire to keep fighting, we need to effectively bring down the missiles Moscow clings to so much to keep the war going. For 35 years, every day has been a day of independence in its own way. Today, we are fighting an existential war — and proving once again that no empire, no dictator, and no other state has the right to decide Ukraine’s future for us.

Independence is the right to be ourselves, to choose our own path, our friends and allies, and to build the country we want to live in. Our task is to make this freedom protected, irreversible, and secure — so that our children have a better future.

And today, we know for sure who our true friends are. We are deeply grateful to all our partners who have stood with Ukraine, strengthened our ability to defend ourselves, and helped us preserve the freedom we fought so hard to regain. Your support is part of Ukraine’s strength.

We fight for Ukraine’s independence — and for the right of every sovereign nation to determine its own future and live free from aggression.

We inherited the fight for independence from generations before us. Our task is to make sure the next generation inherits independence itself.

A horrible and sleepless night in Kyiv. This was one of the most brutal Russian attacks to date, with ballistic missiles raining down on our capital one after another.

At least 12 people were killed in Kyiv, and one more in the Kyiv region. A school, a children’s hospital, and residential buildings were severely damaged. Russia also attacked Chernihiv and Odesa regions.

With such horrific war crimes Putin wants to demonstrate complete impunity. Each Russian ballistic missile is an act of barbarism. And each interceptor delivered to Ukraine is an act of humanity and saved human lives.

We know partners who can deliver these interceptors, and we urge them once again to act without delay. Every delay is measured in human lives.

We are informing all states and international organizations of the consequences of this attack, and we urge them to take immediate, concrete steps to intensify pressure on Russia and bolster support for Ukraine.

I urge Ukrainians abroad to take action.

We are calling on the Ukrainian World Congress, as well as all Ukrainian organizations and communities in key capitals and around the world, to raise their voices now.

We call for three critical measures to protect human lives:

- Deliver air defense: Transfer or sell additional interceptors and air defense systems to Ukraine.

- Tighten sanctions: Increase sanctions pressure to cripple Russia’s ability to manufacture these instruments of terror.

- Build defense capabilities: Partner with Ukraine to develop anti-ballistic capabilities.

Overnight, Russia attacked Kyiv and the surrounding region with more than two dozen ballistic missiles, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than four dozens.

Russian strikes take no summer vacation; support for Ukraine and pressure on the aggressor must not pause either.

Every interceptor counts. They are life-saving tools, and I urge all partners to expedite all relevant decisions.

Russia’s ability to produce these tools of ballistic terror must be disrupted. Additional, tough sanctions are critical and urgent.

I also warn against drawing any false moral equivalence between the aggressor and the state defending itself.

Russian attacks cannot be justified under any circumstances, including any Ukrainian actions. On the contrary, Ukraine has every right to strike legitimate military targets inside Russia in self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter.

Russia's attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region has killed at least 17 people and injured 44.

On the night of August 5, Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon/Oniks missiles, and 115 drones, many of them jet-powered. The main targets were civilian businesses, including warehouses, a brewing company, logistics facilities, infrastructure, and a railway station.

Ballistic missile interceptors could have saved these lives. Delays in providing them, or reluctance to supply them, come at a devastating human cost.

Pressure on Russia must increase – in particular through stronger sanctions on Russia's missile production. The G7, the EU, and all partners who stand for the protection of life must act decisively.

Overnight, a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile crossed into Poland as part of Russia’s massive strike against Ukraine, violating NATO airspace.

This is yet another clear demonstration that strengthening Ukraine’s air defense now is urgent and serves as a guarantee for the protection of the entire Euro-Atlantic community.

Overall, 74 missiles—many of them ballistic—and hundreds of drones targeted Ukraine.

War criminal Putin continues to wage war against women and children.

Parents and three children were killed in the Dnipro region in a direct missile strike on an ordinary home. Two more children were saved from the rubble.

Another missile destroyed residential apartments in Lviv, injuring dozens of people, including children. Two kindergartens and a school were damaged as well. Rescue operations are underway.

There are civilian casualties in Kyiv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Mykolayiv, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and other regions. At least 8 people have been killed across the country and dozens injured as a result of this strike.

Putin’s terror clearly demonstrates that the need to strengthen ballistic protection for Ukraine and all of Europe is urgent.

Every decision on additional air defense capabilities for Ukraine now needs to be taken without delay and all agreements on additional interceptors need to be implemented as quickly as possible.

The Russian missile incursion into Poland also serves as a reminder that there is nothing more urgent for our two countries than countering our common, ages-old enemy, which poses a direct threat to both of our nations. All other disagreements must be put aside during this brutal war. Our top priority must be our shared security.

Ukraine is informing all partners and international organizations about the consequences of this attack.

We urge strong international reactions, increased support for Ukraine, and greater pressure on the aggressor. The cost of continuing this war for Putin must far exceed the cost of ending it.
