Honestly after following the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy so closely for years and from reading tons of interviews and having discussions with remake fans and OG FF7 fans I was able to finally discern why the developers took the direction they did and why people are like that
What I came to realize is that there’s basically a lot of nuance to when people say “I am a Final Fantasy VII fan.” Not even including the remakes, but there’s a group of people that when they say “I’m a FF7 fan” they just mean “I am a fan of the Final Fantasy VII video game that released on the PS1 in 1997” and that’s it. The thing is Final Fantasy VII itself before the remake trilogy even existed was no longer just a PS1 game. Someone could say “I’m a FF7 fan” and be referring to Advent Children, Crisis Core, or Dirge of Cerberus, etc. and technically it would still be correct because all of those do fall under Final Fantasy VII
Now when looking at it from the lens of a developer, they made the original Final Fantasy VII and it was a very successful PS1 game. However following that they expanded the world of FF7 way more by having a movie, books, prequels, spin-offs, mobile games, etc. All of these additions still included lore and extensions to the overall universe of FF7. So now when you’re given the opportunity 15 years later to work on a full remake of FF7 almost no creator is gonna go: “Well fuck all this effort I put into my world and characters after my game came out, I’m just gonna remake the original exactly like how it was before.” Of course they’re now gonna take this chance to embed those new additions into this remake to rebuild it as a new experience of FF7
Now do I think everything following the original FF7 was a masterpiece and amazing for the universe of it? HELL NO…a ton of those things are pretty sloppy and not done that well in my opinion, but the point is they still exist whether I like them or not so I understand why the creators are choosing to incorporate all of it into the remake trilogy. (And to be honest I think the way they’ve been utilizing the FF7 compilation aspects in that have been very solid.)
But basically the TLDR is if you fall into “I’m a FF7 fan (PS1 game only)” the remake trilogy was never going to be for you as it was planned to be for the “I’m a FF7 fan (universe)” crowd. FF7 falls into a special case too where they actually have all this other extra stuff to pull from that other video game remakes don’t which makes it one of a kind. Also let’s not act like that camp would be magically happy if all they did was just keep the game basically the same but make it pretty visuals cause that’s literally what they’re doing for Ocarina of Time’s remake and people are still calling AI slop and soulless; there’s no winning everyone no matter what they do with remakes lol. But anyway if you made it this far reply with a pic of Tifa so I know you’re a real one, thanks for reading :)

I played Mega Man Dual Override at TGS!
The graphics and art style look great, but the game is super hard!
First level was easy but the second level ramped up a lot. You can choose special buffs like extra shield or automatic charging shots at the start of the level. I died a lot with the tough platforming sections where it is easy to fall into the pits. Room to room there was a lot of obstacles with small windows to avoid.
The second boss I fought was really tough. He flies around the screen so it’s hard to shoot him and he has constant projectiles that circle around the screen. I died a lot and could not beat him in time. Special moves were cool and animations look great. Seems like it will be a challenging game.
