8/8 Fun fact: The main character, Sergio, has a #romance with a woman (Hanna), which was inspired by #Desnoes' adolescent relationship with Felicia #Rosshandler. She left #Cuba for the #US, but after seeing the #film, they gradually reconnected after 2 decades.

Thread 1/8 Memories of Underdevelopment (Memorias del Subdesarrollo) was directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and released in 1968. It’s the most renowned work in the history of #Cuban #cinema.

7/8 The #film’s black and white #cinematography may seem similar to #Italian #neorealism, but it’s more closely aligned with #Brazil’s #CinemaNovo or #Cuba’s “imperfect cinema.” Both were #LatinAmerican #movements in the 60s and 70s.

Thread 1/8 Manila in the Claws of the Light (Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag) is a 1975 #film directed by #LinoBrocka. It’s one of his landmark works that changed the course of his career and also the course of #Philippine #cinema.

8/8 #Brocka also includes an image of a raised first and the initials of the National Youth organization, Kabataang Makabayan. These slogans and the depictions of the #social conditions were still relevant when this #film was released.
