Sameinuðu þjóðirnar lýstu árinu 1975 yfir sem alþjóðlegu kvennaári og þrír fulltrúar Íslands fóru á fyrstu kvennaráðstefnu Sameinuðu þjóðanna í Mexíkó árið 1975.
Íslenska kvennahreyfingin hélt fjölmarga viðburði í tengslum við kvennaárið.
