Vice-Chancellor of the @unam_na, Kenneth Matengu, provided a presentation on why Namibia has to industrialise to an audience which included Vice President Lucia Witbooi and other dignitaries.

Matengu cited that manufacturing is seen the world over as the critical path to achieve industrialisation. Matengu was speaking at the RealTest project unveiling for Green Hydrogen technology at UNAM’s Main Campus.

Vice President Lucia Witbooi has challenged the University of Namibia (UNAM) to convert green hydrogen research into commercially viable technologies, businesses and industries, saying scientific innovation must translate into economic growth and industrial development.

Speaking at the launch of the REALTEST Green Hydrogen Research Project at UNAM's main campus in Windhoek on Monday, Witbooi said Namibia's ambitions should extend beyond producing green hydrogen to building knowledge-driven industries powered by local research and innovation.

She said government expects UNAM's Institute for Applied Advanced Research (IAAR) to play a central role in commercialising research and developing technologies that support the country's industrialisation agenda.

"The government therefore looks to UNAM to provide the research excellence, technical expertise, scientific leadership and innovative capacity that will underpin Namibia's industrial development," Witbooi said.

.@NamibiaOPM and @unam_na Partner to Strengthen Namibia’s Disaster Resilience

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and the University of Namibia have signed an agreement to develop a National Resilience Building Strategy aimed at helping Namibia prepare for future disasters.

The strategy will shift the country from reacting to emergencies to planning and investing in disaster preparedness before crises occur.

According to the OPM, regional consultations have already started in Omusati, Oshikoto, Ohangwena and Oshana, with other regions to follow.

UNAM will contribute risk-mapping expertise covering 14 different hazards, while the strategy will involve government, local authorities, communities, the private sector and civil society.

The initiative comes as Namibia faces increasing climate risks, including drought and possible El Niño conditions, with the goal of protecting vulnerable households, farmers and communities.

WATCH: At the University of Namibia’s Ogongo Campus field in the Omusati Region today, farmers, researchers and agricultural experts gathered for the final field evaluation of improved mahangu (pearl millet) varieties under the NAB/@unam_na Seed Project.

The event focuses on assessing eight (8) selected mahangu varieties planted in January this year, with researchers examining key traits such as maturity period, plant height, stem thickness and drought tolerance.

The initiative, a partnership between the Namibian Agronomic Board and UNAM, is expected to support food security and improve crop yields for local farmers.

WATCH: At the @unam_na Ogongo Campus field, eight mahangu varieties were showcased as part of the crop performance evaluation trial, demonstrating how different seed types adapt to local farming conditions.

The varieties included Kangara, Okashana 1, Okashana 2, SOSSAT C88, MS 11, and others.

These pearl millet varieties generally grow within 50 to 90 days, depending on rainfall patterns and soil conditions. Early maturing varieties such as Okashana 1 and Kangara can be harvested in about three months, while others take slightly longer.

The benefits of these varieties include improved drought tolerance, which is important for Namibia’s dry climate, and higher grain yields for food security. Some varieties are also resistant to pests and diseases, making them suitable for local farmers.

.@unam_na Launches Africa’s First International Welding Engineer Programme

The University of Namibia has launched Africa’s first International Welding Engineer (IWE) programme at its José Eduardo dos Santos Campus, marking advancement in engineering education.

The programme, accredited by the International Institute of Welding, enrolled an inaugural cohort of 12 students and aims to address the growing demand for advanced welding expertise in sectors such as green hydrogen, oil and gas, and mining.

Vice Chancellor Kenneth Matengu described the initiative as a strategic step towards producing globally competitive graduates while supporting Namibia’s industrial ambitions.

The programme is delivered in partnership with WeldNAM, ensuring alignment with industry needs.

International support includes scholarships funded through Germany’s RealTest Project. Industry players have also contributed to student sponsorships.

The initiative positions Namibia as a leader in specialised engineering training and strengthens Africa’s role in the global industrial landscape.
