We mourn the passing of our own Dr Jon H. Thompson, Professor Emeritus. An alumnus (BSc '64), he joined us in 1970 and retired in 2007. His 17 years as department chair made us into the modern teaching and research unit we are today—just one of many achievements. He is missed.

Two UNB undergraduates have claimed first place at the 2025 Mathematics Competition, held in October at the Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Conference in Cape Breton.

The winning team—Irina Xie, a first-year student pursuing a double major in mathematics and physics, and James Petersen, a fourth-year bachelor of science student pursuing an honours in mathematics with minors in physics and computer science—finished ahead of 23 other teams representing universities across Atlantic Canada.

Today we observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, honouring the 14 women killed at École Polytechnique in Montréal in 1989 and reflecting on the ongoing impact of gender-based violence.

We remember Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.

In Saint John today, the Faculty of Arts will host a ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Grand Hall, Uptown Saint John. A memorial display will be in the Hans W. Klohn Commons Dec. 6–20.
