From Chapel Hill to Taipei 🌍 UNC School of Social Work’s Rainier Masa, Hsun-ta Hsu and Gina Chowa met with leaders at National Taiwan University to advance global partnerships and gear up for the UNC School of Social Work’s Global Social Development Innovations 2026 Biannual Global Research Symposium, Oct. 5–7, in Chapel Hill.
In the second before a play develops, a basketball player can instantly recognize the defensive scheme (perception), anticipate how the defense will rotate (causal reasoning), simulate several possible outcomes (simulation), and choose the best move (decision).
Today's video AI is far from this. These models can describe what they see, but they cannot explain why something happened, predict what comes next, or decide how to respond. We introduce SVI-Bench to measure these capabilities, and to push toward models that can reason over real-world, multi-agent video.
As “Carolina in My Mind” echoed through Kenan Stadium at Spring Commencement, the #UNC Class of 2026 looked back on unforgettable Tar Heel moments, from move-in day and Old Well sips to championships and Franklin Street celebrations.

Summer is when we think about wellness by taking breaks and recharging. It's also time to reflect on your digital wellness. Everyday tools like Outlook and Microsoft Teams have settings to quiet noise, protect your time, and help you unplug. https://t.co/s7eWD96dBN
🎉 Congratulations to Profs @gberta227 and @SenguptRoni on receiving prestigious NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Awards to support their work in computer vision!

Last week, the Office of Public Affairs, along with @UNC_GradSchool, accompanied three outstanding graduate students to the North Carolina General Assembly for Graduate Education Day.
From marine science and social work to information science and AI, these Tar Heels shared how their research and experiences are making an impact across North Carolina and beyond.
Students met with members of the NCGA to advocate for continued support of graduate education and discuss the importance of research, innovation, and public service at Carolina.
Thank you to Sally Dowd, Iris Greenspun, and Viviane Ito for representing Carolina so well and demonstrating the real-world impacts of graduate education.

🎉 Happy to share that Agent World Model (AWM) paper is accepted to ICML 2026! 🌍 AWM generates infinite synthetic environments for agentic RL training.
🔥 The infrastructure is now merged into meta pytorch/OpenEnv, powering large-scale agentic RL training.
Great work @zhaoywang_CS, @lillianwei423, and nice collab. w/ @Snowflake folks, @XuCanwen, Boyi Liu, @YW91856288, @yao_zhewei, @yuxionghe
