The soldier remembers the aftermath. He was thankful there were no meetings to be had, because who knows what he would've had to say and how long he would've been gone otherwise.
"Had to be careful after that."
( But it was still /too/ good. )
At the request of whiskey, +
If he forgets the good memories then he'll have nothing left to hold onto , and the bad consume him. Trust him, Cassidy has tried it before, it did him no ounce of good.
No matter what, running from, trying to forget, it's pointless in the end.
Better to put a pin in it --
There's both a relief and a feeling of disdain he gets when he realizes Cole is thinking of the same thing as him. Jack had wanted to forget it for now; reminiscing wouldn't do him any good.
But here they are now, reliving what is the past but different.
"...Curry was +
Ah, nostalgia. A familiar memory brought on in the same manner, for a stubborn soldier who doesn't take care of himself, the same food and company to match. Minus Gabriel, sadly. Cassidy hasn't spoken to him at all since he found out the truth post fall.
That was a good --
leaving his desk for two days straight (a smaller than usual feat). It was a Thursday, and it was dark, and the scent of Thai food and their usual bickering and laughter filled the air of the break room.
He thinks he slept well that night, if he slept at all.
He only nods and gives a sound of affirmation. The thought of eating Thai food with Cole reminds him of a night earlier in the day; his hair was already beginning to gray at this point, and Gabriel had forced him to sit down with Cole and him to eat after not +
He can fight it all he wants, the cowboy has made up his mind. At least for now, though maybe in the near future that chance will occur.
" One o' my valued traits. Hey, how 'bout Thai? Sure make some good dishes. "
If he wasn't already so used to not getting his way, then he might've fought a little harder, insisted more, become petulant after.
But this is how things are sometimes, and he suspects he'll get his chance with Cole sooner or later.
"You've always been so stubborn."
" Naw, don't mention it. Ain't nothin' you've not done for me 'fore. "
Waving off his light protests, surfing a device from his pocket, using it to decide on a local takeaway place.
" No need, 'm good. Don't gotta do nothin' but sit your ass down in that chair. "
"...You don't have to do that," Jack grumbles, looking away as a hand instinctively clutches at the blanket from under his arm. "Besides, you've already treated me twice. I ought to do something, too."
Good, that's the purpose of the blanket. Cassidy thought he might need it, the stubborn bastard never rests as is.
" You 'n me both. Go back t' sleep, I'll order us somethin' t' eat, how 'bout that ? "
His hand falls from his side, another deep breath leaving him as he crosses his arms. He's relieved; and he's warm, actually.
"Sorry. I'm just not used to waking up in the best circumstances."
Light sleeper, makes sense. Cassidy raises both hands when he stirrs and immediately reaches for his pulse rifle. " Woah there, ain't mean t' scare ya Morrison. " Raising a brow thereafter, slightly roguely charming grin. " Jus' me coulda still out a bullet in yer skull. --
Shifting, breathing deep.
Then he wakes up with eyes wide under his visor, sitting straight and reaching for his gun—and pausing when he quickly reads the situation.
"...It's just you."
It breaks his heart, heals it, then breaks it all over again. His touch burns and his voice feels like purgatory.
He stops in his tracks and looks back at him.
"I...I don't know. I shouldn't even be here. With you."
( "I miss you." )
Those are words that he didn't realize he wanted to hear. But now that they've reached his ears, he feels as though he's lost a major part of him.
He missed him too. He waited, chased, fought and griped. But /his/ Gabriel would never say something like that. +
" Go? Where? " Gabriel murmurs, resting a hand on the other's soldier.
" Jack. You're actin' strange. Let's get drinks. Talk. Like always. It doesn't need to be about whatever you're avoiding. " He says, grip tightening ever so slightly, making sure Jack can't just walk away.
"...I don't feel like talking about it."
It would be better if Jack hadn't seen him at all, because the ache in his chest has tripled since becoming familiarized again with what he's lost.
But he /missed him/.
"Look, it's just... You should go." Pause. "Gabe."
It's likely better to leave him confused rather than anything else. Giving information, too much of it, would lead to consequences Jack couldn't be sure of.
But the way Gabriel asks for him to open up makes his heart clench. It's been so long since they just talked like this. +
Odd. Gabriel's arms cross, brows furrowing as he looks at Jack's back. The mask is new. But he's not used to this Jack, not at all. This isn't the "Golden Boy" he'd known for so many years.
He seemed almost weighed down. Burdened. They'd been close for so long.
