Today, we paused at our metaphorical Chautari to reflect on a remarkable journey.

@UNDPNepal proudly celebrated 60 years of steadfast partnership with the Government and the people of Nepal, honoring six decades of shared progress and resilience.

We were privileged to be joined by the Hon’ble Minister of Finance (@mofnepal), Dr. @SwarnimWagle, who shared a deeply personal connection as a @UNDP alumnus, having contributed to the Nepal Human Development Report in the 1990s and the Global Human Development Report in 2012.

In his keynote address, Hon’ble Minister Dr. Wagle highlighted UNDP’s critical role in seeding vital investments and delivering on both global and regional public goods. He commended our ongoing engagement in climate action and democratic governance, encouraging us to build on these foundations to foster even stronger cross-border collaboration.

In response to the devastating August 2026 floods, the Government of the Republic of Korea and @UNDP have handed over specialized emergency response equipment to the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Authority (@NDRRMA_Nepal), to bolster ongoing recovery efforts.

The assistance—comprising camera-equipped drones and portable 3KVA backup power generators—will support emergency operations, strengthen response capacities, and help restore essential services in the hardest-hit communities.

Reaffirming this partnership, Ambassador-designate Mr. Park Jae-kyung and UNDP Resident Representative Kyoko Yokosuka highlighted their shared commitment to translating international solidarity into immediate, practical capacity on the ground, while investing in Nepal's long-term disaster preparedness and climate resilience.

Behind the devastating numbers of the recent floods are countless human stories. For survivors who lost everything, rebuilding their lives remains a great challenge.

To support the Government of Nepal in recovery efforts, @UNDP is supporting data management in the affected areas.

Accurate data can be key to streamlining relief, mapping damage, and building resilience.

The Bhotekoshi-Trishuli flash flood has left 1,300 lives lost, and government estimates indicate 7,570 private buildings and 48 public buildings have been damaged.

UNDP’s RAPIDA Analysis estimates that the disaster has generated a staggering 2.2 million tonnes of debris and sediments, blocking roads, and damaging essential municipal infrastructure.

As co-lead of the Early Recovery Cluster, @UNDP is working closely with the Government of Nepal to support ongoing response and early recovery efforts.

We are also deploying several @UNVolunteers directly to some of the hardest-hit locations in the three affected districts. The volunteers will support data management and data analytics.

Accurate data is crucial to ensure that relief and early recovery efforts reach those who need it most in a timely, coordinated, and accountable manner.

In the wake of devastating flash floods in Rasuwa, keeping essential public services running is critical to communities’ recovery.

In partnership with the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration (MoLCFAGA), @UNDP is supporting Uttargaya and Gosainkunda Rural Municipalities with essential equipment, furniture and supplies to help local governments resume their day-to-day functions and continue serving their communities.

The support marks an important step from immediate response towards longer-term recovery and resilient local governance.

@UNDPNepal stands with the Government of Nepal and the local communities as they recover, rebuild and strengthen institutions that are essential to delivering services when they are needed most.

Today marks the first anniversary of the Gen-Z Movement in Nepal—a day of remembrance and a milestone in redefining youth leadership, civic participation, and democratic governance.

What began as a call for more transparent, accountable, and responsive governance, has evolved into a space where youth voices contribute to decision making.

Through @UNDP's Advancing Civic Engagement for Democratic Participation Project, supported by Switzerland, we are helping bridge generational divides by uniting youth innovation with institutional experience.

Moving forward, the project is actively driving change across Nepal's provinces by creating safe, spaces where young people can express themselves and listen to one another. We are also bringing youth advocates, community members, and policymakers to the same table to have open, constructive discussions on key local issues. By uniting local citizens and leaders into strong, collaborative teams, we are helping communities tackle their daily governance challenges openly and honestly.

Governance is not a passive process; it is a shared journey built on accountability, hope, and collaborative action.

Today, as the Government of Nepal observes a National Day of Mourning for the lives tragically lost in the devastating August 2026 floods, @UNDP and other UN agencies in Nepal stood in solemn solidarity. @UN_Nepal personnel gathered to observe a moment of silence and lowered the @UN flag to half-mast.

Talked to @rick_n @Reuters about what we are seeing in the Himalaya-Hindu Kush region as a whole: millions of people who depend on these glaciers and rivers for water, food, power and livelihoods, while living with heightened climate risk given the increasing fragility of these high ice mountain ecosystems.

What we saw this week is that current construction and technologies are yet to catch up with the realism, resilience and resistance needed to withstand Nature's fiercest forces.

Some hard choices ahead on where people choose to locate and live, how they rebuild, and how much will be invested in a future that will require adaptation at a speed and scale more than ever before.

“Technology cannot move fast enough to prevent loss along these massive river systems that catch the overflow of the glacier lakes.” @UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific @kanniwignaraja warns that millions across the Himalayan region could face growing risks from glacial floods in the years ahead.

As devastating floods along Nepal’s river systems leave more than 1,000 people dead and thousands missing, the scale of destruction is immense. A preliminary @UNDP assessment estimates 2.2 million tonnes of debris across the affected areas, including buildings, rocks and sediment.

UNDP’s RAPIDA assessment is helping turn satellite data and other evidence into timely information to support response and early recovery.
