After nearly 12 years working with the Washington Post, I was among the many foreign correspondents laid off today. Covering Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the legacy of the United States’ longest war was an honor. There were so many more stories to tell.
Our brilliant @reemakkad to @MarshallProj and @PeterFinnWP to @propublica. Thrilled for both newsrooms.

This is one of my last articles for The Washington Post. The incredible photography is by @vanhoutenphoto, who was also laid off.
No full-time staff who were in Kyiv on Feb. 24, 2022 for The Post are still with the paper.

Have been too shattered to write this but for the sake of clarity — I have also been laid off by the Post. I was one of the few journalists still working inside Russia. My last story went on the front page and featured rare testimonies from wounded soldiers criticizing the war.
Gutted for Rick and so many other stellar peers laid off by the Post. Afghanistan and Pakistan need more coverage, more scrutiny, more compelling storytelling like Rick’s, not less.
When the Post is laying off so many international correspondents, it's the local staff who are most at risk - they don't have the same union protections. Many work in warzones. Though some are being kept as contractors it's not clear how long. Pls donate https://t.co/r5CnFmM8x7
The @washingtonpost graphics team was also decimated yesterday — 70% of our award-winning, industry-leading team is now gone. These *journalists* are legends in their field and a huge get for any news org that values visual storytelling. Hire them. Each one is exceptional.
Washington Post’s foreign pages serve the public good. Their excellent reporters break news and inform readers about the world as few outlets can anymore. I was proud to work there and stand in full solidarity with those facing layoffs @JeffBezos it’s not too late to #savethepost
The correspondents on this video include friends, former colleagues, and just reporters whose bylines I look for and whose work I admire. They cover the world for the Washington Post and are appealing to Jeff Bezos not to gut their department.
If @JeffBezos follows through w/ reported layoffs, the Post newsroom will have shrunk from more than 1,100 to roughly 600 in under 3 years.
Slashing staff isn't making us profitable - it hurts our ability to produce distinctive journalism & gives people less reason to subscribe.
@JeffBezos Covering the legacy of America’s longest war is an enormous privilege. Telling Afghanistan’s story requires being there and confronting those in power. If The Post’s coverage disappears, there will be fewer witnesses. #SaveThePost
This is not a world were a world-class newspaper should retract its reporters from places like Afghanistan. We need eye-witnesses, courageous journalists who tell what they see and hear. Otherwise the last hope of Afghanistan‘s girls and women dies in silence.
